ISAAC HAYES "Theme From Shaft" 1971 PROMO 45rpm NORTHERN SOUL 7" Enterprise Stax
Promotional copy of the award-winning "Theme From Shaft" by Isaac Hayes.
Released on Enterprise Records (a division of Stax Records, Inc.) out of Memphis in August 1971.
One side is mono, the other is stereo.
The instrumental section, played by the Bar Kays and Movement, deploys pulsating bass, stuttering wah-wah guitar, Hayes's own distinctive piano playing, a descending four-note horn motif, ascending flute runs and the now famous Pearl and Dean-style blasts of brass and strings.
Thirty five years on, Shaft may sound dated, but it's a sound that inspired a generation of soul musicians. Hayes' laid back vocal delivery and the gorgeous arrangements by Johnny Allen are still breathtaking, and the album remains a quintessential slice of '70s soul.
Nominated for two Academy Awards, Isaac Hayes became the first African American composer to win an Academy Award (Best Original Song).
He also won a Grammy Award (Best Original Score Written For a Motion Picture) for the entire soundtrack album he recorded with Johnny Allen.
This 45-single release topped the US charts and hit number 4 in the UK.
⋆ Vinyl is in VG+ to EX condition with barely any visible play wear, no hairlines or sleeve scuffs deep enough to impair the audio, or cause any skips, distortion, etc. Light surface noise, most audible in the quiet passages, not at all overpowering. Still retains gloss and shine. A very nice copy overall.
⋆ Does not have original sleeve, will be shipped in a generic plain-white paper sleeve with clear plastic cover.
