[I had trouble with my Weeping Willow tree today while taking pictures - it kept hurling excess dead leaves onto my photo table! Soon as I'd sweep them away, out would come a new batch. So I went with the flow.]
HERE IS EITHER a drum solo accompanied by piano, or a piano solo accompanied by drums. Either way, it’s a powerful excursion into late ragtime from 1917 by HOWARD KOPP (drums) and FRANK BANTA (piano). These boys really mix it up on “IT TAKES A LONG, TALL BROWNSKIN GAL (TO MAKE A PREACHER LAY HIS BIBLE DOWN) – a blues - and the terser “ONE STEP MORE,” a lively one-step.
Banta, as always, is spot-on in his clean, vigorous piano playing; and Kopp delivers a virtual master class in Ragtime drumming. In his kit, he uses two tom-toms, one close to the recording horn, the other distant. This lends the recording a surprising amount of spatial depth.
This original 1917 Blue Label Columbia is in admirable E- condition. Virtually no wear, some scuffs and scratches. No residual moisture damage, to which Columbias of this vintage are prone.
