??????????????
Although they are not one of the better-known San Francisco bands to have emerged from the ballroom circuit of the late '60s and early '70s, It's a Beautiful Day were no less memorable for their unique progressive rock style that contrasted well with the Bay Area psychedelic scene. Led by David LaFlamme (flute/violin/vocals) and his wife, Linda LaFlamme (keyboards), the six-piece unit on this album vacillates between light and ethereal pieces such as the lead-off cut, "White Bird," to the heavier, prog rock-influenced "Bombay Calling." One of the most distinct characteristics of It's a Beautiful Day is their instrumentation. The prominence of David LaFlamme -- former violin soloist with the Utah Symphony and original member of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks -- adds a refinement to It's a Beautiful Day's sound. Likewise, the intricate melodies -- mostly composed by the LaFlammes -- are structured around the band's immense virtuosity, a prime example being the exquisitely haunting harpsichord-driven "Girl With No Eyes." The noir framework, as well as lyrics such as "...she's just a reflection of all of the time I've been high," point rather candidly to the hallucinogenic nature of the song's -- if not the band's -- influences. The same can be said of the languidly eerie "Bulgaria." The almost chant-like quality of the track slowly crescendos into an hypnotic and dreamlike sonic journey -- led by LaFlamme's brilliant violin work. By virtue of being a Bay Area fixture in the late '60s, It's a Beautiful Day could also easily double as a hippie dance band -- which they can also execute with great aplomb -- as the wildly up-tempo "Time Is" amply proves. It's a Beautiful Day remains as a timepiece and evidence of how sophisticated rock & roll had become in the fertile environs of the San Francisco music scene.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY LINDSAY PLANER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
If ever someone would do a poll of 10 most fondly remembered albums of the ‘60’s, chances are that this, infinitely delicate and gentle, melodic and subtle 1968 freshman release by "It’s a Beautiful Day" would be among the top 6-7 contenders for the title. The music on this album, the quality and integrity of the musicianship; the production; the cover…everything is so unbelievably evocative and mesmerizing; so…psychedelic in the original sense of the word. David La Flame, Linda LaFlame, Hall Wagenet, Mitchell Hollman, Val Fuentes, and Patti Santos created some of the most memorable music of the 20th Century: Just ask Deep Purple, who brazenly stole just about the ENTIRE "Child in Time" from this album’s "Time is". Plus, there’s this gorgious Globe/Propaganda cover design, which gives a whole new meaning to ‘vivid’ and ‘imaginative’. An indispensible relic of 60's psychedelia, absolutely required listening. Miss it now, and weep later.
***
When Matthew Katz (Moby Grape’s original manager) and The Group parted their ways (under quite unfriendly circumstances), Mr. Katz walked away with the original master tapes of the Group’s classic studio albums (which, alas, he still owns and partially controls). In the late ‘70s, Matthew Katz reissued all Moby Grape albums (long out of print by that point) in their original covers, by using those original master tapes. These titles sound awesome and are on par with (if not better than) the original Columbia pressings in every way.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) In addition, the record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- A faint, barely visible water stain affects the area about 1.1/2 inch wide along the bottom seam (visible on both sides as well as inside); there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is vaguely visible and has caused a slight warp in the affected area.
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)
- Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams
- Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
