Think of this album as a granddaddy of all things acid-jazzy, groovy, funky, and otherwise modern in the post-Avant-garde Jazz world. Ivan “Joe” Jones, the unheralded forefather of Acid Jazz, recorded this funky monster for Prestige label in 1967. Obscenely hard to find in its original vinyl format, this album has been out of print for decades, and was only shortly made available domestically as a British import CD. However, for the gorgeous, resonant, sparkling sound, nothing beats this the real thing we are offering here. The material ranges from covers of Rock material of the day (Sonny and Cher’s “The Beat goes on” for example) to the classic blues, funk and bop tunes, with an updated arrangements and treatment, of course.. If you love your guitar sound fuzzy, half-tone-y, feedback-y and occasionally distorted, this is the album for you.

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted below, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the normal room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE RECORD AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) and one longer, but totally superficial scuff (on “Call me”) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For the most part, vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that these abrasions ARE NOT audible.

(b)            The record has a Rudy "Van Gelder" inscription or  his initials (RVG) stamped/etched in the trail-off vinyl. On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(c)             The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the very first pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, exceedingly vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from your compact disc!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD- (very good minus), almost on the cusp of GOOD ++ (G+).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has partially split upper and lower seam (4 and 1. ½ inch / 10 and 4 cm, respectively)

-         Cover has some visible ring wear

-         Cover has two (2) small cutout holes

-         A visible water stain affects the area about 1 inch wide along the opening (ON FRONT SIDE) and about 1. ½ inch wide along three seams - opening, top,  and spine (ON BACK SIDE). On the BACK side, there is no damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover, slight warp and distracting yellowish discoloration  in the affected area. On the FRONT SIDE the affected area is smaller and somewhat less apparent, but the stain did cause some visible peel-off marks along the opening edge (one contiguous peeled-off spot about 2 square inches in size). The previous owner cleverly masked / camouflaged the affected area with a like-colored (black) market as best as he could, which helps explain why the peel-off mark is not visible on our photo).

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along all three seams (upper, lower, spine) plus the opening edge.

-         A light wrinkle (crease) in one corner (on back side only).

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out corners

-         No drill marks or indents

-         No writing

-         No stickers or labels

-         No razor marks

-         No pressure marks, lines, streaks, or razor cuts.

-         No stamps

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
