Original 1970 first press of this essential lp presenting Xenakis' superb early electronic/musique concrete works, all composed at the legendary INA-GRM studios in Paris, home of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Francois Bayle, and Luc Ferrari. But Xenakis differentiated his work from those composers, aiming to bring out the "richness" of his concrete sound sources by not relying heavily on electronic filtering techniques and instead concentrating on montage, splicing, and speed changes. He writes, "you start with a sound made up of many particles, then see how you can make it change imperceptibly... developing until an entirely new sound results. I likened it to the onset of madness, when a person suddenly realizes that an environment that seemed familiar to him has now become altered in a profound, threatening sense..." Orient-Occident III uses sounds from cardboard boxes, metal rods, gongs, ionosphere signals, and heavily slowed-down samples from his previous orchestral recordings; it was made to accompany a film about ancient eastern and western sculpture. Concret P-H II, composed entirely of tape-manipulated sounds of smoldering charcoal, is a revised version of a piece originally conceived to be played alongside Edgard Varese's Poeme electronique at the Brussels World's Fair. Diamorphoses incorporates sounds of natural disasters and railroad and plane accidents. The sidelong Bohor I, dedicated to Pierre Schaeffer, is derived from the sounds of bracelets and other jewelry and a Laotian mouth organ.

Xenakis was a Greek architect and composer who worked with Le Corbusier and brought the mathematics and logic of engineering into his "stochastic" music; he studied under Darius Milhaud, Arthur Honegger, and Olivier Messiaen, was influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage, worked with Pierre Schaeffer (at the INA-GRM studios), Lukas Foss, and Pierre Boulez, and is associated with fellow eastern europeans Gyorgy Ligeti and Krzysztof Penderecki. • This music should be of interest to fans of Rune Lindblad, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Otto Luening, Tod Dockstader, Raymond Scott, Herbert Eimert, Henk Badings, Dick Raaijmakers, Mauricio Kagel, Henri Pousseur, Theremin, Ondioline, Oskar Sala, Trautonium, Tom Dissevelt, Francois-Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Bernard Parmegiani, Ilhan Mimaroglu, and Jon Appleton.

Packing I pack professionally and with the utmost care drawn from years of experience trading vinyl internationally. I use new record mailers which I have determined are the best and most protective, reinforced with cardboard inserts and bubble wrap padding. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves and with the vinyl outside of the cover to prevent damage. All packages are completely sealed with strong packing tape covering all openings. Unless requested, no paper invoice is included in the package, both to save trees and to avoid customs difficulties. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
