Description

Ida Cox; Paramount 12237 : "My Mean Man Blues"  (Matrix  1855-*) / "Worried in Mind Blues" (Matrix  1843-4)

Take number on "My Mean Man Blues" is unclear; see photo. It looks like a "4" impressed backward (mirror image). Dixon and Godrich (4th ed.) indicate that there are two versions of Paramount 12237, each containing different takes. Both indicate Tommy Ladnier, cornet and Lovie Austin, piano. Recorded Chicago "c. August 1924." One lists "Johnny Dodds, cl" on the tracks. They indicate "My Mean Man Blues" as 1855-4 and "Worried in Mind Blues" as 1843-3, which is different from what's impressed on this copy. Could be a typo in the book?

The other lists "prob. Jimmy O'Bryant or Stump Evans, cl" and adds "Charles Harris, as." Dixon and Godrich indicate this is take 1 of each matrix number, and I don't seem to hear any alto sax.

See photos for condition. I've tried to grade using the closest of ebay's categories. The following description from another grading system is for a grade not used by ebay, but the description is pretty accurate: "Quite playable still, but distortion and heavy greying in loud passages. Music remains loud in most passages. Surface noise and scratches well below music level."  Distortion in vocals more prominent toward end of each side. There is plenty of surface noise and scratches, but it tracks well and no cracks or chips. Does not have the original sleeve; will be in a replacement Kraft paper sleeve.

I've owned 78s for years and respect their fragility. To ship, I will place the record in a replacement Kraft paper sleeve, sandwich it between cardboard layers, and place in a larger box with foam popcorn.
