This lovely LP – a superb collector’s copy – from Melodiya (CM 03011-12, Russian pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features Igor Oistrakh’s exalted account of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, made with his father David conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra on resplendent form, a recording set down in the Austrian capital in 1970.

Incidentally, there is nothing second-rate about David Oistrakh’s conducting. The Beethoven Concerto was a cornerstone of his own repertoire and the accompaniment he provides his son can withstand the most exalted comparisons – as can Igor Oistrakh’s own playing. Igor Oistrakh plays Joachim’s cadenzas in the First and Third Movements.

There are brief liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket – provided in Russian, English, and French. The striking cover photo fo Oistrakh father and son is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. The only flaw barring a MINT grading concerns a small bit of writing (former owner’s initials) to the rear panel. Otherwise, the album appears as new – a truly outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
