Mega-rare lp of fantastic group improv-noise created by the legendary avant garde composers collective Il Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza (shortened by RCA to 'Il Gruppo' and packaged in psychedelic cover art for this US release). The members of this all-star ensemble, Ennio Morricone (trumpet, tam-tam), Frederic Rzewski (piano, percussion, Chinese wind bell, tam-tam), Franco Evangelisti (prepared piano, piano, timpani, celesta), Roland Kayn (Hammond organ, prepared piano, vibraphone, marimba), Mario Bertoncini (percussion, prepared piano, piano, timpani), Ivan Vandor (tenor sax), Jerry Rosen (clarinet), and John Heineman (cello, trombone, prepared piano), make their instruments sound as alien as possible using the most extreme experimental techniques derived from both free jazz and experimental classical, including occasional use of electronics. The stunning Springs Quartet has four players extracting a bizarre universe of sound from the strings of a single prepared piano; Lip Service collages electronically processed vocal noises; Conversations is a brass trio skronk-fest featuring all manners of multiphonics, squealing, and squawking. The notes mention Webern, John Cage, Lukas Foss, Stockhausen, Berio, Boulez, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Ravi Shankar, and Ali Akbar Khan as influences. "What you will hear on this recording is... a number of musical experiences or happenings produced by the provocations and reactions occurring among the members of a group of composer-performers." Evangelisti was a founding member of the groundbreaking Gruppe Nuova Consonanza live electronic improv group along with Mario Bertoncini, John Heineman, Larry Austin, John Eaton, Ennio Morricone, Frederic Rzewski, Egisto Macchi, Aldo Clementi, and Roland Kayn (contemporary to Musica Elettronica Viva/MEV and AMM), and a pioneer of early electronic music at the WDR Koln studios in the 1950s where he worked with Gottfried Michael Koenig and Herbert Brun; he studied under Daniel Paris and Harald Genzmer and also worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Hans-Klaus Metzger, Hermann Scherchen, and Luigi Nono. • Rzewski is best known as the co-founder of electronic improv group Musica Elettronica Viva (MEV) with Alvin Curran and Richard Teitelbaum, and studied under Walter Piston, Roger Sessions, Milton Babbitt, Luigi Dallapiccola, and Elliott Carter; as a pianist, he is also a renowned performer of avant garde works by John Cage, Pierre Boulez, Christian Wolff, Anthony Braxton, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. • Morricone incorporated folk and native instruments into his well known film soundtracks, worked with Sergio Leone, Pedro Almodovar, Brian DePalma, Roman Polanski, and Oliver Stone, and was influential to John Zorn. • Kayn studied under Boris Blacher and Oskar Sala, and worked with Herbert Eimert at the WDR Koln electronic studios in the 1950s and with Bruno Maderna. • This lp will also be of interest to fans of Derek Bailey, Borbetomagus, Sun-Ra, New Phonic Art, Michel Portal, Peter Brotzmann, FMP, Incus, Hugh Davies, Oskar Sala, Trautonium, Herbert Eimert, John Cage, Gordon Mumma, Alvin Lucier, Robert Ashley, David Behrman, Sonic Arts Union, Richard Teitelbaum, Alvin Curran, Hugh Le Caine, Otomo Yoshihide, and Ikue Mori.
