Ilhan Mimaroglu: Face The Windmills, Turn Left-- Eight Preludes for Magnetic Tape (1966-73); Agony (1965); Le Tombeau d'Edgar Poe (1964); Intermezzo (1964); Bowery Bum (1964)
Finnadar SR 9012 USA 1976 LP Vinyl: (sealed)
Cover: ex- (sealed; upper right corner is dented; 1.5" split at center of bottom seam, where there is an opening in the shrink; sticker remnants on shrink) An excellent release on Mimaroglu's own label in impossible-to-find still-sealed condition, containing early electronic/musique concrete composed by this pioneer at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. The Preludes are constructed from the processed sounds of frequency generators, electric, string, and woodwind instruments, and, in the case of No.16, the voice of Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer; several of the Preludes appearing here remain unreleased elsewhere. The Arshile Gorky-inspired Agony uses processed electronic sounds sourced from various oscillators, generators, and filters, and an array of stereo effects. Mimaroglu has cited Ornette Coleman, Charles Ives, and Franz Liszt as influences for his 3 earlier works Le Tombeau (a concrete "melodrama" that derives all of its sounds from a recording of a Stephane Mallarme poem read by Erdem Buri), Intermezzo (made using only pure electronic tones, ring modulation, and mixing techniques), and the Jean Debuffet-inspired Bowery Bum (sourced entirely from rubber bands amplified by special microphones).
Mimaroglu studied under Vladimir Ussachevsky and Edgard Varese, composed at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center (alongside Otto Luening, Mario Davidovsky, Bulent Arel, Milton Babbitt, Wendy Carlos, etc.) and the INA-GRM musique concrete studios (of Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Francois Bayle, Bernard Parmegiani, Luc Ferrari, Michel Chion, Jean-Claude Risset, Francois Bernard Mache, Ivo Malec, Michel Redolfi, etc.), worked with Jean Dubuffet, ran the Finnadar avant garde record label where he produced essential recordings of Marcel Duchamp, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Daria Semegen, Frederic Rzewski, and Henry Cowell, and worked for Atlantic producing jazz albums by Freddie Hubbard, John Coltrane, and Charles Mingus. Other references: Tod Dockstader, Herbert Eimert, Rune Lindblad, Dick Raaijmakers, Ragnar Grippe, Jon Appleton, Jean Michel Jarre, and Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen...
