This record is for the vintage record collector that knows what they are looking at.
PLEASE, VIEW THE PICTURES PROVIDED…
No cracks, scratches in play surface.
Record plays very well with minimal background noise.
The label has a gray/olive tint to it and also multiple fine scratches.
The reverse side is blank except for a legal notice sticker from the Consolidated Talking Machine Co .
Very Early Scarce 7" Improved GRAM-O-PHONE record # A-158, in great condition from the turn of the century dating no later then 1900. This is a single sided record that has good volume and plays through smoothly without any issues on my Victor D phonograph using a fiber needle… There is some minimal background noise which is the norm for records 120 years old but this record is above average. I'm not a record collector but I would give it an overall rating of 8+ out of 10 as far as sound quality.
From what I have seen on the internet,, it appears this US label was only produced in 1900 by Eldridge R. Johnson who’s parent company was the Consolidated Talking Machine Company of Philadelphia and preceded the Victor Talking Machine Co. Supposedly Eldridge Johnson came up with a superior way in which to reproduce multiple copies of quality records from a single master.
This record label, Improved Gram-O-Phone Record was from the first run of records ever to carry a paper label but lasted only a few months making these Gram-O-Phone labeled records highly desirable to collectors. In less then a year, through a court injunction, Eldridge Johnson was prohibited from using the term Gram-O-Phone on the labels of any of his so-called superior records thus the IMPROVED RECORD was the label that remained on his disc but only briefly. Once he moved his operation to New Jersey, Eldridge Johnson's Consolidated Talking Machine Company reorganized and became the Victor Talking Machine Co..
This is an announced record at the beginning.. Also, instead of the record number being inscribed, it is stamped in the run out zone over the word (Improved). Don't know if that holds any significance or not...

According to the research site Discography of American Historical Recording's (DAHR), the listed date for this record is either 7/20/1900 or 11/10/1900. I can not see any take number on the record.. See the last attached picture for this documentation..
