Although there's still a heavy guitar presence, the energetic lads seem most intent on crafting sunny, melodic tunes with a melancholy lyrical edge. Frontman Christopher Conley's quirky yet likeable vocals are welcoming, even when he's singing "In the darkness/we were all strip-searched/nothing was found" on "What Went Wrong." Meanwhile, the rest of the group displays their instrumental skills with complex yet catchy songs such as "In My Waking Life" and the title track. Drawing apparent inspiration from Big Star, the Posies, Elliott Smith, Shudder to Think, and Green Day, Saves the Day has created an intelligent and charming pop album that's not afraid to rock out.
