Description

Intruders – ‘(You’d Better) Check Yourself’ / ‘It Must Be Love’ – Gamble 204 (US)

No introduction necessary; the Intruders, particularly when Samuel “Little Sonny” Brown was at the helm, which was for most of their career, were one of the greatest sounds out of Philadelphia ever. After a handful of early sixties 45s on Gowen, Music Voice/Musicor and Excel, they became the stars at Gamble. This 1966 release was their third for the label, a storming tune later covered successfully by the I. A. P. Co. (Italian Asphalt & Pavement Company), a group formerly known as the Duprees, for Colossus. (Nice, that one, too, but no patch on the glorious original!)

This copy plays beautifully though please note that there is a small but deep cut right at the outer edge of the flipside, ‘It Must Be Love’. It appears four and a half revolutions before the music starts and does not affect play at all, but it is there and should be mentioned. Also, there is a slight noise just before the music starts (on both sides) which derives from tiny imperfections in the grooves. Please consult the clips for verification; they start a few seconds before the music begins on both sides. I’ve listened to a couple of different clips of this record lately, from recent sales on eBay as well as recordings posted on Youtube, and they all sound roughly the same. It’s a very loud record, but it’s not exactly Hi-Fi. (Those who have come this far will know what I mean.) I dare say this particular copy is about as good as any you could find out there.  

Condition: VG+ or perhaps a notch better; some tiny marks and scuffs, but they are inaudible (please listen to the clips). Slightly smudged labels with a “BB” hole (please see scans).
