Suzi Quatro/Slade/Sweet-esque Glam Rock originally compiled on RPM’s ‘Velvet Tinmine – 20 Junk Shop Glam Ravers’
Iron Virgin were a Scottish glam rock band of the 1970s. Their early stage wear evoked ‘A Clockwork Orange’. Latterly, they dressed as American footballers, complete with platform boots and added iron chastity belts.
The band formed in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1972, where they were discovered by Decca Records producer Nick Tauber and signed to the label's "progressive" offshoot Deram. Their first single was a cover of the Paul McCartney song ‘Jet’. Recorded in December 1973, the song was released in February 1974 and was getting good exposure until Wings issued their version as a single, effectively smothering Iron Virgin's recording.
The band’s second and best-known single was ‘Rebels Rule’; a variation on it called "Stand Up for Kenny Everett" was recorded as a jingle and often played on the BBC by… yes, you’ve guessed it. Acclaimed as "a brilliantly bombastic ode to teenage anarchy”, the single's commercial failure is one of the great mysteries of the glam rock era. In 2003 ‘Rebels Rule’ was a standout track on the excellent RPM junk shop glam compilation ‘Velvet Tinmine’. Listen to it back-to-back with ‘California Paradise’ from The Runaways’ 1977 ‘Queens Of Noise’ LP and it’s obvious that soon-to-be-Runaways Joan Jett, Sandy West, their svengali Kim Fowley and lyricist Kari Khrome were paying strict attention back in 1974 when ‘Rebels Rule’ played on repeat at Rodney (Bingemheimer)’s English Disco, their glam hangout in downtown LA. It’s a stomping soup of Slade’n’Sweet set to a Suzi Quatro beat; a lost classic that more than deserves a place in the glam rock history book.

This is the very rare French picture sleeve version. There is a small ink stain in evidence on the second band member in from the left. Also, at the top of the sleeve there is some loss of the pink background colour, noticeable mostly above the ‘b’ of ‘rebels’. There are a couple of barely noticeable dirty marks on the reverse of the sleeve, too, hence the ‘VG’ rating.
The vinyl is in ‘Ex-’ condition and plays very well. Please listen to the MP3(s):
