Given Jackie DeShannon's estimable talents as a songwriter and her sure, confident command of pop, rock & roll, and rhythm & blues as a vocalist, it seems curious that when she was given her first chance to make a full-length album in 1963, it was a folk music set without a single new song. DeShannon has said her original idea for the album was to record a dozen Bob Dylan songs, which would have been a bold move only a few months after the release of The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, but her record company rejected the idea; instead, she covered three Dylan tunes along with a number of selections familiar to folks who followed the more commercial end of the '60s folk scene of the day, including "If I Had a Hammer," "500 Miles," "Puff the Magic Dragon," and "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" (the latter somewhat bowdlerized, though DeShannon's playful delivery compensates for the innuendo stripped from the lyrics). There's just enough grain in DeShannon's voice to cut the sweetness of some of the sappier numbers on this set (though she slightly overplays the pathos of "500 Miles"), and she handles the Dylan songs and "Jailer Bring Me Water" (written by Bobby Darin during his flirtation with folk music) with intelligence and maturity. The production is a bit too glossy to suit the material, especially with the frequent use of vocal choruses, but Jack Nitzsche's musical arrangements give the melodies strong, subtle support and the album boasts an emotional resonance that sets it apart from most of the singers that sought to take commercial advantage of the '60s folk scare before the arrival of the Beatles and Dylan's embrace of rock & roll thinned out the herd. Stylistically, Jackie DeShannon stands apart from the singer's later work, but it confirms she was a gifted interpretive singer who could handle the work of other songwriters as well as her own.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 3:1.

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has three small  rectangular, sticker residue stains (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker), covering an area of about 3 square inches on the front panel, and 4-5 smaller yellowish spots on the back, covering about 1 square inch

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
