JACKIE McLEAN – Action Action Action ORIG Blue Note LP / BLP 4218 (US, Mono, 1966)

Happy to present this first Mono press of this fierce September 1964 recording featuring McLean, Charles Tolliver, Bobby Hutcherson, Cecil McBee and Billy Higgins. Nicely preserved and sounding very fine!
The single format, stiff, thick, non-laminated US-style sleeve grades VG+ (Very Good Plus) and is close to excellent were it not for a split to the top edge of just over an inch. Also a bit of a dent to the front top left corner, a small patch of correction fluid to the top rear right corner and some very light shelf rubs (hardly noticeable). Structurally near perfect, lies totally flat, strong opening edges, brilliant spine with no damage. Many would probably grade higher. Maintains most of its whiteness too with no writing or other damage. Note also it has the ‘43 West 61ST St, New York , N.Y 10023’ address to the lower rear.
The labels show no cause for concern – no writing, full whiteness, no rips or residue. I can make out some very light spindle traces to one side only. They have the ‘New York USA’ text. A fabulous pair of these vintage labels!
The vinyl is a lovely copy. No marks except for a soft patch of scuffing to the first band on Side 2. Fantastic shine, no embedded dirt, scratches, hairlines or dust pockets. Looks superb and worthy of a true EX+ (Excellent Plus) grade. It has ‘VAN GELDER’ machine stamped into the run-offs of both sides but no 'ear' or 'P' symbol. IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays excellently also – a touch of dust static in the quiet areas and a couple of clicks to T1/S2, that’s all. NO snap, loud crackle or pops, no repeated clicks, distortion or lack of definition. Super sharp clarity and no groove wear. A looked after copy.
