Two people were instrumental in reviving the fading career of Brunswick's superstar Jackie Wilson: Producer Carl Davis and songwriter Barbara Acklin. Davis seemed to finally bring the proper sound to the table, pushing Wilson away from Broadway tunes, pop schmaltz and watered down R&B, and giving him the space to explore his abilities as a gritty soul singer. Barbara Acklin came up with the right material: Originally a secretary at Brunswick Records, she wowed Carl Davis with her song "Whispers (Gettin' Louder)", who instantly recognized its potential. Wilson himself loved the song, and it would prove to become his first Top 10 R&B hit since "Baby Workout" (1963). A delicate, mid-tempo groove augmented with sweet female backing vocals and Wilson's honey dripping vocals, at times subdued and sensitive, at times soaring to the heights of heaven. With "Whispers (Gettin' Louder)", Jackie Wilson was back on track as Chicago's No. 1 soul star. The B-side to Wilson's commercial comeback was a fast driving rocker, the blaring "The Fairest Of Them All", featuring incessant tambourines and blasts of brass throughout.

Wilson's first album under the auspices of Carl Davis ranks as one of the finest in the entire Chicago Soul canon. As was the custom in those days, soul albums in general tended to consist of one or two hitsingles, some B-side and substandard filler. 'Whispers', however, is a solid LP from beginning to end. Aside the wonderful title track, and the stupidly funky hits "I Don't Want to Lose You" and "Just Be Sincere", this album is loaded with neatly crafted Chi-style soul grooves, that treads the fine line between sophistication and sheer rawness.

"My Heart Is Calling" is an incessant stomper featuring infectious backing vocals and a mean, deceptively simple rhythm guitar pattern. Wilson is in his vocal element on the beautiful, heart wrenching ballad  "Who Am I", that never sounds sappy, despite the bombastic arrangement. One of Wilson's originals is next up, the fast rocking "(Too Much) Sweet Loving", which was co-authored by Brunswick chief Nat Tarnopol. Jaunting guitars, a low-end piano fill and thunderous drumming sets off the fingersnapper "I Can Do Better", with Wilson bouncing through the lyrics with fervor. Next up is the almost Motown-ish "Only Your Love Can Save Me", with its pretty backing harmonies, razor sharp guitar 'chanks', infectious brass and a nasty sax solo. Jackie's vocal outro is equally stunning.

In a lighter vein, the lamenting "To Make a Big Man Cry", stars a weeping cello echoing Wilson's lines, and an elaborately arranged string section. It's the only tune on the album that slightly harkens back to Wilson's pre-Davis recordings.

It's right back to Soulville, however, with the horn heavy floorshaker "I've Got to Talk to You", featuring more of Wilson's honey dipped vocals and an irresistible chorus. The album ends on a sensitive note with a haunting reading of "Tears Will Tell It All": a low-tempo, bluesy soul vamp that seemed to have been made especially for Jackie's elastic vocal range.

A wonderful album and certainly one of Wilson's most consistent.

·       CONDITION:

·       THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS (WEAK) NEAR MINT, STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ?SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear in one small area not covered by the shrink wrap (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side   (nothing significant)

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
