Description
JAKE THACKRAY: Jake Thackray At The Queen Elizabeth Hall (No label stated, SLX 359/SLX 360, 1971, 2-LP)
This was a strictly limited private 'Presentation Copy' of the whole concert from which the single LP 'Live Performance' was selected. It was pressed by EMI (Columbia) but not branded as such. Here are 27 songs plus a 2-song encore, whilst the LP as released only included 14 songs. The gatefold sleeve is interesting in that the inner gatefold is completely blank.
How many of these were pressed remains unknown, but I've seen all of three copies in the last thirty-odd years of owning this, and this copy is one of those three! It is thanks to me that the Jake Thackray fan club went hunting for the original master tapes and finally got this whole set issued on CD. And even that CD is now getting hard to find!
Condition-wise, it is not brilliant, though not too bad, but bear in mind that you are almost certainly never going to get your hands on another copy. The sleeve has some creasing and the inevitable laminate shrinkage, plus a dent on the rear opening edge. All four sides have been heavily played judging by the many spindle marks - the photo of the side 4 label is representative of the other labels too. Playing wise, it's a nice VG+ to EX for the most part (as in some random non-repeating pops here and there but mostly EX), and the only problems are:
Side 1 A handful of clicks during the banter between Family Tree and The LIttle Black Foal. A couple of bouts of light repeating clicks on Worried Brown Eyes for about 20 seconds the first and 15 seconds the second. Plus two clicks at the end. Mostly light clicks in the banter between Worried Brown Eyes and The Hole. A few clicks during The Hole. Much of the above is caused by a couple of clear marks and the rest of the side is not problematic.
Side 2 A few clicks during the banter at the start of Miss World and two clicks during the track. You get a near perfect copy of this track on the free LP, though. Some light background near the start of Caroline Diggby Pratte. A single skip during Pass Milord The Rooster Juice with no visible cause. You get a near perfect copy of this track on the free LP, though. A few light clicks during Remember Bethlehem. You get a near perfect copy of this track on the free LP, though. A few light clicks during the banter introducing The Ladies Basic Freedom Polka. You get a near perfect copy of this track on the free LP, though. A few clicks near the end of Mrs. Murphy, mostly light.
Side 3 A few clicks on The Cactus. You get a near perfect copy of this track on the free LP, though. Some light repeating pops near the start of Lah Di Dah plus a couple of clicks later. You get a near perfect copy of this track on the free LP, though. A few clicks at the start of Personal Column. A few light clicks near the start of The Black Swan and a couple more short bouts later.
Side 4 A few clicks near the end of The Blacksmith And The Toffee-Maker. Light repeating pops throughout much of Sophie caused by a visible mark.
Basically, as soon as I got a CD burner, I digitised this and manually declicked it in Audacity, which left me with a pretty decent-sounding CD-R copy, with the single skip the only bit I couldn't do anything about. It's not really worried me because I've been so pleased to at least have had a copy...but I've had it for half of my life and it's someone else's turn to enjoy it now.
You also get a free copy of the 1976 Note edition of Live Performance in EX playing condition but with torn sleeve. It's free, so no complaints! It also means that you can dub near perfect version of some of the tracks listed above with clicks, etc.
So, expensive but super-duper rare.
* * * * Records generally have hairline or other surface marks from removal from/insertion into sleeves - these are not mentioned unless causing audible noise. Records are play tested unless stated and any defects over and above what should be expected of the generic Record Collector grading are described in the listing. Please look at the photos carefully for condition of sleeves, etc.
UK bidders please note that eBay now has a 'closed box' invoicing system, which means that I cannot manually update postage if you win multiple items. If you are bidding on multiple items, please message me to let me know, and then wait until all auctions have finished before paying, where eBay lets you combine postage.
Non-UK bidders please note that I use eBay's Global Shipping Programme, which means that I have no knowledge of what extra charges eBay makes based on your country's customs requirements, etc. Everything goes via eBay's distribution centre in Lichfield. All I get to see is your name and a reference number.
* * * * All items are from my own various collections and most have been in storage for 20+ years. Lockdowns (and various heart ops.) made me wonder why I have thousands of records that I will never choose to listen to again.
I was just about to update the above when someone bid on the LP and locked the description, so here's the additional information. That the address was Jon Isherwood's then address was confirmed by Shep Woolley. I forgot to add that bit, sorry.
