Though James Brown and His Famous Flames had scored an R&B Top Ten hit in 1956 with "Please, Please, Please," and Brown's next nine singles for Federal Records flopped but the next, "Try Me," his third single of 1958, scored. That was when King Records (Federal's parent label) assembled this, Brown's debut album, out of some of those singles sessions. You can hear the sound of a group and its enthusiastic singer looking for a hit, sometimes in the rock & roll of "Chonnie-On-Chon" (1957) or the 1956 B-side "I Feel That Old Feeling Coming On," sometimes by remaking "Please, Please, Please" under another name, such as "I Don't Know" (1956), sometimes by tackling Coasters-like novelty material such as "That Dood It" (1958), sometimes by aping the smooth Sam Cooke, as on the 1958 B-side "That's When I Lost My Heart," and once by rewriting "My Bonnie (Lies over the Ocean)" as the 1958 B-side "Baby Cries over the Ocean." (...) The album presented the sound of a major star-to-be in search of his sound.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILLIAM RUHLMANN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
Why Godfather of Soul (or someone at King records) decided to change the original cover of his first album is unclear; either it was too suggestive for the Eisenhower's era, or he simply did not find it sufficiently supportive of his big Ego (he replaced the original cover with the one showing him in a crooning pose on the front cover). Whatever the reason, the change in covers created one of the biggest rarities in the hobby. Copies of the original "Legs" cover, which we are offering here, have been known to change hands for more than $2,000.00. This is the item of such historical significance that missing out on it would be a major act of foolishness. Don’t fail to grab (by the leg!) this insanely rare piece which is only offered once in a blue moon. This is probably the very first "Soul" album, as we have come to know this genre today, and - as such - a rarity of major proportions

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) CAUTION: The vinyl is only GOOD (G) and probably not suitable for repeated, continued playing. Nevertheless, the record plays fine and without skipping, but with considerable, annoying and audible hiss, surface noise and clicks and pops. This record WAS play-graded.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings)
(d) This is the original flat-edge pressing
(e) “Legs” cover version of this album is much rarer than the subsequent “concert pose” version of this album. We estimate that the latter outnumber the former by a ratio of close to 300:1
(f) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (THIS IS A MONSTROUSLY RARE ORIGINAL “LEGS” COVER)
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Shelf wear noted on the spine (nothing significant)
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Small 1 square inch drop-like stain noted on the back panel.
- The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side (nothing significant
- Cover has some ring wear. On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4 (front side) and 6 (back side).
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No split seams
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No wrinkles or creases
- No writing
- No stamps
- No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
- No peel-off marks
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No glue traces or wax residue.
- No bar codes
- No RIAA stamps or stickers.
