Super Bad is a fairly standard James Brown album: one great all-time classic and then some filler.

"Super Bad (Parts 1-3)" is the focus here,the R&B number one hit that was one of the early examples of the new style James Brown and the original J.B's. It is obviously absolutely superb and this album version is made just as wonderful as the classic single by being over nine minutes long. A powerfully funky groove, it is but one of the many cuts that could be considered the signature song of James Brown.

And onto the filler. The band here is better than usual, and James is, as always, in fine form, so these tracks are actually fairly good. The best is the closing cover of "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" which had already been memorably done by Isaac Hayes. This version isn't quite as good, but it is different enough to be worth listening to, being a more uptempo take on the Jimmy Webb classic. The other likeable filler cut is "Let It Be Me" which is also fairly upbeat, with nice female backing vocals and a great horn part.

The only track that is noticeably poorer than the rest is the overlong "Giving Out of Juice" which starts well but then proceeds to drag and drag. Apart from that, the one major downside to this album is that, unfortunately, it has been ruined with overdubbed audiences. The recording of the announcer at the start is clearly the exact same one as that on the Sex Machine album, it's that cheaply done. Although the fake live aspect of the album is annoying, and continues to be so all the way through, it doesn't prevent the good cuts from being enjoyable.

Overall, this is really just one essential cut and some pleasant filler, overlaid with audience cheering for no good reason. Super Bad is far from being necessary, but it's not bad and should hold some appeal for Brown fanatics.

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, SUPER-THICK, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-        Cover has a neat, round (PROMO?) cutout hole in one of the corners

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the lower seam

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-        Cover has three corners slightly worn (BARELY VISIBLE)
