Why Godfather of Soul had decided to change the original cover of his first album is unclear; either it was too controversial / subversive for the Age of Eisenhower, or he simply did not find it sufficiently supportive of his big Ego (he soon replaced the original “baby face” cover we have here with one showing multiple identical photos of him on the front cover). Whatever the reason, the change in covers created one of the biggest rarities in the hobby. Copies of the original “Baby Face” cover we are offering here have been known to change hands for more than $1,000.00. This is the item of such historical significance that missing out on it would be a major act of foolishness. Don’t fail to grab this insanely rare piece which is only offered once in a blue moon. This is probably one of the first “Soul” albums, as we have come to know this genre today, and – as such – a rarity of colossal proportions.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            CAUTION! The vinyl is only VERY GOOD (-)- TO VERY GOOD, with multiple, numerous, small scuffs and scratches which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with light and tolerable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)            The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)             True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)              Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++

(We would have graded the cover NEAR MINT, but for the split seams, which are a common and widespread problem with almost all KING covers)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has a partially split top and bottom seams; These two split seams were delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape (one piece on each seam)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-         No wrinkles or creases

-         No yellowing from aging

-         No writing

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No peel-off marks

-         No stains

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
