James Brown's third album features early 1960-era James Brown, moving from King's Federal subsidiary to the parent label with the hits "Bewildered," "If You Want Me," "You've Got the Power," "I'll Go Crazy," "Baby You're Right" (co-written with Joe Tex), and "I'll Never, Never Let You Go." Although Brown's albums would soon be interchangeable, the same cuts reappearing again and again, this is one of his better efforts as well as a pivotal point in his career.

Why Godfather of Soul decided to change the original cover of his third album is unclear; either it was too controversial / subversive for the Age of Eisenhower, or he simply did not find it sufficiently supportive of his big Ego (he soon replaced the original “baby face” cover we have here with one showing multiple identical photos of him on the front cover). Whatever the reason, the change in covers created one of the biggest rarities in the hobby. Copies of the original “Baby Face” cover we are offering here have been known to change hands for more than $1,000.00. This is the item of such historical significance that missing out on it would be a major act of foolishness. Don’t fail to grab this insanely rare piece which is only offered once in a blue moon. This is probably one of the first “Soul” albums, as we have come to know this genre today, and – as such – a rarity of colossal  proportions.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          CAUTION: The vinyl is BARELY FAIR (F) and probably not suitable for repeated, continued playing.

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a completely split bottom seam ; This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (more than 10 inches / 22 centimeters) ; This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-        A small brownish stain affects the area about 2 square inch in size; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
