Why Godfather of Soul had decided to change the original cover of his first album is unclear; either it was too controversial / subversive for the Age of Eisenhower, or he simply did not find it sufficiently supportive of his big Ego (he soon replaced the original “smoking gun” cover we have here with another, more subdued and less sexually suggestive, cover). Whatever the reason, the change in covers created one of the biggest rarities in the hobby. Copies of the original “Smoking Gun” cover we are offering here have been known to change hands for more than $1,000.00. This is the item of such historical significance that missing out on it would be a major act of foolishness. Don’t fail to grab this insanely rare piece which is only offered once in a blue moon. This is probably one of the first “Soul” albums, as we have come to know this genre today, and – as such – a rarity of colossal proportions.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            CAUTION! The vinyl is only GOOD++ TO VERY GOOD - , with multiple, numerous, scuffs which are BOTH visible AND audible. The record plays with bearable BUT AUDIBLE surface noise and some pops and clicks. The record plays without skipping throughout. This record WAS play-graded.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)            True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD- / very good minus / (VG-).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The previous owner taped the seams with numerous small pieces of packaging tape, applied across (perpendicularly to) the seams, which does affect the integrity and appearance of the cover somewhat. WE MANAGED TO REMOVE THE TAPE FROM THE FRONT COVER, BUT DID NOT WANT TO TINKER WITH THE TAPE ON THE BACK COVER, WHICH REMAINS THERE (five small pieces altogether)

-         Cover has a partially split top AND bottom seams; These two split seams were delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some ring wear. On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Front cover has a few small peel-off marks (and one slightly larger on the back panel)

-         Small pale blue (ink?) stain noted on the back panel (less than ½ square inch in size)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
