Fans of James Brown were given an unexpected pleasure if they were within the listening range of Augusta, GA, radio station WDRW around the second half of 1972. The singer owned the station and interrupted its regularly scheduled programming with a peppered-up introduction of his yet unreleased single "Get on the Good Foot," which would be his biggest-selling single since 1968's "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud." As he had been about "Super Bad," Brown was so sure of "Get on the Good Foot"'s hit ability that he withdrew "I Got Ants in My Pants" (another Brown jam) from release, with "Get on the Good Foot" going on Polydor Records' release schedule in its place. Recorded at Soundcraft Studios in North Augusta, SC, on May 9, 1972, it's one of the singer's zestier tracks. On hand were Brown regulars: drummer Jabo Starks, trombonist Fred Wesley, guitarist Hearlon "Cheese" Martin, and tenor saxist St. Clair Pickney, as well as horn players Jimmy Parker, Russell Crimes, and Ike Oakley. Listen to guitarist Bobby Roach's tight, sinewy line that runs throughout the track. Co-written by producer Brown, Wesley, and Joseph Mims, the million-selling "Get on the Good Foot" stomped at number one R&B for four weeks, going to number one R&B and number 18 pop in summer 1972. The Get on the Good Foot LP also boasted two Top Three R&B singles: "I Got a Bag of My Own" and a remake of an earlier Brown side, "Lost Someone."

In an era where Brown went on to make three studio doubles, Get on the Good Foot was the first. This 1972 album finds Brown having great chemistry with both his newer J.B.'s and the New York session players. The title track is particularly stunning. "Get on the Good Foot" was so off-the-cuff and nonpareil, he couldn't have replicated the formula even if he wanted to. "I Got a Bag of My Own," on the other hand, sounds forced and synthetic. Although Brown was known for his new product, this album has him recycling some of his King singles. Doing so-so remakes of "Cold Sweat" and "Ain't It a Groove" could be taken as an attempt for Brown to ease some of his old catalog to his new label. It was a nice try, but you should stick with the originals. Not surprisingly, Get on the Good Foot does have its share of throwaway cuts. "Recitation By Hank Ballard" is a spoken-word effort with Ballard extolling his buddy's virtues as well as giving unsolicited advice about the perils of showbiz. "Dirty Harri," a lukewarm instrumental, goes nowhere fast for all of its six-plus minutes. The 1995 CD reissue offered a track that was previously available only on the international release, the warm "I Know It's True," which hearkens back to Brown's '60s-ballad style as he turns in a genuinely affecting performance. Although Get on the Good Foot only managed to yield two hits, the album is one of his more varied and fun efforts.

(b)          The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-        The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 2 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 1/2 and 1 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.

-         Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a microscopic price code written in one corner)
