Lovers of ragtime piano will not want to miss this gem of a two-disc set, which for the first time gathers performances of all known compositions by the great rag composer James Scott. Though his reputation is overshadowed by those of his contemporaries Joseph Lamb and, especially, Scott Joplin -- and though many details of his biography and personal life remain obscure -- this collection should convince any listener of Scott's prodigious talent and significance as an American composer. His compositions tend to be a bit more energetic and physically demanding than Joplin's, though they are no less elegant; gems like "Frog Legs Rag" and "Dixie Dimples" stand easily with the best work of both Joplin and Lamb. The waltzes, of which he wrote a significant number, are no less charming, and his few published songs are also presented here, though sadly they are not sung. The production is of high quality. Another of the wonderful recordings captured by Ewing Nunn, AP76/77 is an adventure in James Scott, Knocky Parker delivering the entire piano catalog with aplomb.

Recorded in mono in 1961 (never available in stereo), it nevertheless delivers a fine “view” of the music, the tonalities wonderfully captured by the small-diaphragm microphone Nunn preferred, that in fact captures the proceedings with a sense of naturalness hard to fault.

A classic of jazz and LP repertory, here in a polished, laminated jacket without fault (Texas markings), both LPs within (Saukville, Wisconsin markings) should play near mint.

From one of the finest recordists ever to place a microphone before a musician.

My Grading System:

M (mint) Record is new, shiny, never played.A Mint cover would be flawless.

M- (mint minus) Record is like new, probably played a few times, but it doesn't effect the quality of the sound. A Mint- cover would be nearly flawless, with only traces of wear.

EX (excellent) Record in great shape, may have light marks, played more than a few times but little or no surface noise. An EX cover would show light wear, but nothing major.

VG+ (very good plus) Record has been played more times, it has more marks and surface noise, but no skips.  A VG+ cover would show some wear.

VG (very good) Record has been played many times, may be more surface noise, but it shouldn't skip while playing.  A VG cover would look worn.

G (good) Record is in bad condition, this is worth only for archive items - just to have that until you find better. A G cover would be quite used.
