This is a bizarre album, originally released in early 1966, and technically perhaps not even a Jan & Dean album because the duo isn't on it. On the other hand, it was done under the duo's auspices, features Jan Berry in a musical capacity very prominently, and is made up of nothing but the duo's music. The general perception, of course, is that Jan & Dean were almost exclusively a singles act in terms of their most important output, and that is largely true. But a few of their albums were "conceptual" in nature...and then there's Pop Symphony, No. 1, the strangest album in their entire output : an instrumental album of Jan & Dean hits played by the Bel-Aire Pops Orchestra (augmented by some top L.A. sessionmen, most of whom played on Jan & Dean's usual output), arranged by Jan Berry and George Tipton, who also conducted. What's funny is that Pop Symphony, No. 1 isn't a bad little record, and was also damned rare for a very long time. The material seems at first like standard pop instrumental music, except it does have those melodies, which work whether they're sung by Jan & Dean or, as is the case here, carried by a brass or string section. And it turns out that Pop Symphony, No. 1 is full of entertaining and unexpected delights, with the result that this record isn't quite as bizarre as it seems. Pop Symphony, No. 1 perhaps didn't have much to do with Jan & Dean's usual output, but it's a damn entertaining album for anyone who loves this music. It also raises a fascinating question concerning Jan Berry and what might have been: if this is the kind of music that he was coming up with in late 1965, before experimentation of any sort was even accepted in most pop music circles, what might he have achieved had he made it safely into the early psychedelic era?

The album is an improbable combination, built around car songs combined with an album of music intended for a vocal duo re-arranged for orchestra. And parts of it are uneven, to be sure, especially the relatively weak "Drag Strip Girl" — most of it, however, is a lot of fun, and not just the obvious cuts such as the hit "Drag City," or their delightful cover of "Little Deuce Coup." The duo was already experimenting in the studio when they cut Drag City, and it's not a huge jump from "Dead Man's Curve," with its 18 layers of overdubbed vocals, to the orchestral excursions of Jan & Dean's Pop Symphony No. 1. Their musical dexterity isn't quite a match for the lyrical conceits of numbers like "Hot Stocker," but the orchestral album also proves that they had more to offer than car instrumentals such as "Sting Ray." One can only marvel at the reinterpretation of "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" as a Viennese waltz, or "Surf City" arranged for pizzicato strings, and the myriad unexpected shapes given most of the material on the "Pop Symphony" album

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
