Label Conditions: Both look fantastic, very clean and attractive with only very light and few, faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: LBY 1229.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A very impressive 158 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Quite rare and try to find a better copy of earliest pressed original mono record. One time has overlooked and another barely played record from this same collection.

Original Year of Release: 1964

Brief Info: Jan Berry and Dean Torrence were a very popular vocal harmony duo that date back to the late 50s. They reached the height of their popularity in the mid-60s where they had a host of top-selling singles. Famed for their ‘surf-sound’ at this time, very much in-line with The Beach Boys, their popularity in the US grew and grew. However album sales in the UK was not so widespread and much of their classic works remain quite rare and elusive. This album is taken from the original soundtrack to the movie of the same name. This hugely pressed mono gem is from that collection recently acquired and sounds stunning. This was the classic mono era and few even owned stereo equipment – the one and only original owner did however, thus most all from this collection are in the most fantastic of conditions and this mono record was never played on mono equipment. For fans of Jan & Dean, this rare album is unlikely to ever be found better than this.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Quite high.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ (at the very least), a single format with front lamination that wraps around the closed edges and on to three large rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and including the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: Beautiful and showing minimal wear for a cover well into its mid-40s. The laminate is clean, fresh and very clear, it retains a superb shine and clarity. The whiteness of the artwork has to be seen for real to be fully appreciated and this will truly remind of what these vintage covers once looked-like when first purchased. There is hardly any noteworthy creasing or friction rubs. All fully adhered too with no lifting or blistering, always good news for maximum visual pleasure. The right edge sees the laminate end a little short of full width, but even this exposed white strip is clean with no grime-line formation. For attractiveness, this superb front will take a lot of beating, any traces of toning here are minuscule, any tiny specks are confined to the spine edge (but look very hard to see any).

Cover Back: The unprotected main back panel shows little real wear, just a little mild set-off or ultra faint toning traces near the entrance edge (again, look hard). Just the odd ultra light surface crease but no rubbing or ring marks. The flipbacks are all very neat indeed and suffer no lifting or damage and have almost avoided end burring entirely. There is a light crease on the bottom right one which is pretty much the only blemish on the entire cover. There is no grime-line formation to the ends and these have not darkened to any extent at all. So a back that gives few clues to age and again it will prove difficult to find much better.

Top Edge: Practically unworn and very straight too, still fully laminated.

Bottom Edge: As above with just a microscopic rub trace if being ultra critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering, a slightly ‘rustic’ cut in manufacture is only apparent when viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Apart from the mildest traces of darkening on the very cornertips, this spine is barely worn at all. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Very small tip rubs and slightly toned on the left pair but in terms of a cover this incredible age, it’s almost an insult to mention such tiny blemishes. All retain excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this rare original mid-60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: EX+ (at the very least). This is the original tracing paper lined inner that were around in the mid-60s from this manufacturer. The linings being delicate and fragile but this is superb and undamaged with an immaculate window that is almost as made. No edge splits and any creasing minor. The inner has darkened, only mildly over the years but real wear is almost zero and this vintage original inner complements the record perfectly.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: To grade this EX is not doing this beautiful record full justice, if anyone has a much better copy, I sure would like to see it. With close examination under light, the faintest of surface traces can just be seen. Just ultra fine and faint removal type traces that barely merit any real downgrading, and this too on such an old record. These have no sound of course. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and with fantastic sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare album plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Made in an era of quality, this gem will last indefinintely when played on modern quality equipment and this has never been subjected to a mono stylus ever. Few copies will match or outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled,. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, my first time on this one myself. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
