"I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" was grossly and unjustly maligned by critics of the day. Lukewarm reviews didn't stop Janis' star from blazing and rising, however: the album reached the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 and went gold (500,000 copies sold) within a month, en route to eventual platinum status. Time, unlike many critics, has been kind to this album, and it is now quite clear that their grousing is thoroughly unjustified. Though a bit of a departure from her psychedelic blues-rock breakthrough "Cheap Thrills", "I Got Dem Ol'Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" is a footstomping, heart-tugging, blues-soaked romp through some of the strongest material Janis Joplin ever recorded during her all-too-brief life.

Janis made sure to wring every last droplet of passion and power from her prodigious pipes for these songs. Nowhere is this more apparent than on the album opener, the funky, blues-rock tour de force "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)". Joplin's exuberant blues shouts and falsetto squalls must really be heard to be believed. Even slower-tempo numbers, such as her sublime cover of the Chantel's "Maybe", are drenched in enough vocal firepower to inflict a righteous third-degree burn upon the listener. Speaking of covers, Janis also tackles the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody" and Nina Simone's "Little Girl Blue" with both tenderness and chutzpah, particularly on the latter. "Little Girl Blue", in fact, is quite possibly the most nuanced and understated performance Joplin ever turned in, and is a definite highlight of this disc. She also contributed two first-rate originals to the set: the greasy, ballsy blues "One Good Man" and the remarkable "Kozmic Blues", which just missed cracking the Billboard Top 40. Completing the original album are "As Good As You've Been To This World" and "Work Me, Lord". The former is smoking revue-style R&B/rock that strongly recalls Ike and Tina Turner and features an extended instrumental opening, funky horns, and whiplash vocals. The latter is the set's closer, a spellbinding, surprisingly spiritual affair that is actually hard to listen to; so deeply does Janis convey her vulnerability, insecurity, loneliness, desperation, and pain. Rarely does an artist lay her soul so starkly naked as Janis does here. Absolutely magnificent.

"I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" was Janis Joplin's maiden voyage as a solo star, as a bandleader, and, most importantly, as a maturing artist deliberately searching for her own sound and spot in the music firmament. The recording sessions were by all accounts wrought with tension, her band occasionally insufferable, and contemporary critics in paroxysms over her leaving Big Brother, but none of these can detract from the fact that the only solo album Janis lived to see released was, and will always be, a stunningly soulful, impossibly powerful statement from the greatest white blues belter that ever lived.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY OSCAR HERNANDEZ, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Believe it or not,  Kozmic Blues is Janis Joplin's lone "proper" STUDIO album:  the first album ("Big Brother and the Holding Company") was essentially a collection of demos haphazardly assembled and issued as an album against the group's will; the second  ("Cheap Thrills") was half-live in concert/half-live in studio, and her final studio album ("Pearl") was never completed,  leaving it to Nick Gravenites to finish the job by using two demos with overdubs and an instrumental track for which Janis never recorded a vocal track. So, this is it, folks. For all practical purposes and intents, the only studio album Janis Joplin finished in her lifetime.

Kozmic Blues is a classic Janis Joplin album, one of only three albums issued in her lifetime ('Pearl' was issued posthumously) , and one of her greatest, most potent and enduring statements. Track listing: Try (Just A Little Bit Harder) --- Maybe --- One Good Man --- As Good As You've Been To This World --- To Love Somebody --- Kozmic Blues --- Little Girl Blue --- Work Me, Lord.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·      CONDITION:

·      THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
