LSC 2237 Byron Janis - Rachmaninoff Concerto # 3 - rare Living Stereo shaded dog 1S/1S Indianapolis NM-
Audiophile: RCA LSC 2237 Rachmaninov “Piano Concerto #3” Original Issue 1S/1S Pressing. Great condition but not perfect. This is the original 1s/1s "Shaded Dog" pressing of a highly desirable title. My visual examination of the vinyl reveals no scratches, not even hairlines, and spindle trails are just about non-existent. That said, there are a lot of scuffs on the vinyl but the record plays great with only occasional light ticking. The album cover is also in NM- condition. There is some minor discoloration but no seam splits, marks, writing, or ring wear. The record sleeve is also original to the record.
The American pianist Bryon Janis made two studio recordings of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto. The more famous one is his recording on the Mercury Living Presence label in the early 1960's with Antal Dorati conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. That LP has developed legendary status over the years, having been named to the TAS list. I own both records and frankly speaking, I have not been blown away by the sound as much as others claim to have been. The performance, on the other hand, is worth the price of admission. This RCA Living Stereo recording, issued in 1957, actually preceded the Mercury one but has never received the same status. One reason, perhaps, is it's rarity. This is not a RCA Living Stereo that you see very often, and to my knowledge, it had one pressing with the stampers 1S/1S. The performance is no less dynamic or exciting than the Mercury and I might actually prefer the sound of the RCA. As with most of the Living Stereo albums the bass extension is not particularly deep but it is forgivable.
As a bonus, if you purchase this LP, I will throw in the Janis/Mercury LP (Mercury SR90283) for FREE. The vinyl is in VG++ condition and the color back cover is virtually flawless. It is a Mercury Early Pressing with RFR-1/RFR-3 stampers.
