The original 1956 first LP issue by Sun Ra and his Mythscience Arkestra on Transition Records. This is an amazing piece of avant garde Jazz, well ahead of its time. The overall condition of this recording is probably best described as a "Basket Case" which somehow seems fitting of a Sun Ra recording. This album appears to have been very wet at some time in its life. I will attempt to describe this LP using conventional (Goldmine) grading conventions as follows:
COVER CONDITION = G-
The cover is split on both top and bottom seams, with the spine split at the first inch from the top and 2 1/2 up from the bottom. The remainder of the spine is solidly intact. There is heavy water damage to the back of the cover with 20% of the black paper backing missing and minor deformation of the lower 1/3 of the cover. The front cover picture is somewhat discolored from water damage in the lower right hand corner. All four corners of the cover have moderate rounding and wear.
BOOKLET CONDITION = VG
Included is the original 12 page booklet insert which somehow miraculously avoided the flood. The first two pages of the booklet have a half inch tear near the bottom and have a crease which runs down the length of the pages (see pic). The remaining 10 pages are clean, clear and crisp. The staples holding the booklet together are rusty. The booklet contains information about the recording and musicians including pictures and with the noted defects on the first two pages is graded VG.
RECORD CONDITION = VG++
Here comes the basket case part. I found this recording in its present state and can describe what is there and only guess at how it came to be. Inside the album cover, the record is in a plastic inner sleeve. At the bottom of the sleeve are the two labels which were once on the record but are no longer attached. There is evidence of glue on both the backs of the labels and the center of the record itself to sustain this. The labels are clean, unstained and crisp, looking much as they did the day they were printed. The recording itself has NO SCUFFS and NO SCRATCHES with some evidence of few carefull plays. "TRLP 10A" and "TRLP 10B" are inscribed in the run out area of the record (see pic). This IS the genuine article. This record plays much like the day it was pressed with no surface noise. I would grade the appearance and sound quality of the vinyl itself as M-, but for the labels having become unattached, the overall grade is V++. I leave it for the next owner to reattach the labels.
That is about the best description I can provide on a less than mint conditioned outrageously scarce recording of no little significance. Not the finest copy in existance, but possibly the best currently available. Please use the "Ask the seller a Question" feature for any specific inquiries.
