On offer here is a VERY RARE original native NEW ZEALAND issue of the second album by American rock artist J. D. BLACKFOOT.  The US issue eventually appeared several months later (November 1974) after J. D. had returned stateside and signed with ‘Fantasy Records’.  However, it is this first NZ issue with its UNIQUE COVER DESIGN and 12 PAGE BOOKLET that is more sought after.

J. D. BLACKFOOT and his wife travelled to New Zealand for a month’s holiday in 1972, but ended up living in Auckland for a year and a half.  While there, J. D. served as Promotions Manager for Pye Records and finished writing “The Song of Crazy Horse” (a song suite which he had commenced a few years earlier under highly unusual circumstances).  The resultant album was recorded (for the most part) at Stebbing Studios in Auckland during the latter part of 1973, and released on Pye Records in February 1974.

The title track is a side-long epic about the life of the Oglala Sioux Indian Chief, Crazy Horse.  This LP won the 1974 New Zealand RATA (Recorded Arts Talent Award) in the “Album of the Year” category.

Guest New Zealand performers include Bob Jackson, Billy Kristian, Jimmy Sloggett and Frank Gibson.

VG++ impressive appearance overall—minor handling wear with spot peeling on front (corners), scuffing along top & bottom seams (VG) and spine (VG++), original Auckland music store ‘MUSIC CITY’ sticker on back (top-right) that can easily be removed - kinda looks cool so I have left it there (front: VG++, back: EX).

Booklet (12 pages – 285mm x 285mm):

VG+ moderate handling wear, some writing on front page (see image).

Record:

VG++ visual: very clean overall (EX), few insignificant hairlines & one light surface scuff towards end of side 1 (VG+); audible: PUNCHY and VIBRANT SOUND despite some minimal underlying surface noise, many dealers would grade disc as EX; labels: light spindle wear (side 1), moderate spindle wear (side 2).
