THIS ITEM COMES FROM THE INCREDIBLE, SINGLE-OWNER COLLECTION WE ACQUIRED A WHILE AGO, IN WHICH ITEMS ORIGINALLY BOUGHT BY THE OWNER FROM THE MID-1970s to THE MID-2010s WERE KEPT STILL SEALED IN A NEAR-LABORATORY, TIME-CAPSULE CONDITIONS AND IN PRACTICALLY CLIMATE- AND HUMIDITY- CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT.  CONDITIONS OF SOME OF THESE ITEMS RANGE FROM IMPECCABLE TO TRULY UNBELIEVABLE. SOME OF THESE BEAUTIFUL MUSEUM PIECES LOOKED SO PERFECT THAT WE HAD TO REINSPECT AND RE-EXAMINE THEM A FEW TIMES TO MAKE SURE THEY OUR EYES ARE NOT DECEIVING US.

The legendary French painter and sculptor Jean Dubuffet exalted naivety and spontaneity in visual art, and his brazenly experimental recordings on Musical Experiences evince the same spirit through sound. He once reflected, "Certain unexpected windfalls ... come of improvising on an instrument one doesn't really know how to use."

Dubuffet, who famously founded the art brut (or outsider art) movement, began making music in the early 1960s with avant-garde figure Asger Jorn. With no training, they played a range of instruments: saxophone, bassoon, detuned piano, hurdy-gurdy, cabrette, bombarde and so on. Soon, Dubuffet reserved a room in his home for making music and bought two tape-recorders in order to manually edit the results. He wrote fondly of the recordings' crudeness and the sense that they "had no beginning and no end but were simply extracts taken haphazardly from a ceaseless and ever-flowing score."

Dubuffet's discography begins in 1961 with the release Expériences Musicales, a six 10-inch record set produced in an edition of fifty with original artwork and lithographed sleeves. Musical Experiences, compiled by composer Ilhan Mimaroglu and released in 1973 on his Finnadar imprint, collects eight of the twenty pieces on the much sought-after Expériences Musicales.

The eight selections on the present release were culled from a total of twenty pieces that were issued on six 10" LPs in a limited edition of fifty copies, each numbered and signed by Dubuffet. A book on the subject has been written by Beniamino dal Fabbro under the title of "Esperienze musicali di Jean Dubuffet", published by Edizioni del Cavallino, Venice, 1962. Eleven other pieces, realized by Dubuffet with Asger Jorn, between December 1960 and March 1961, were issued on four 10" LPs in a limited eidtion of 50 copies.

The lacquers for this 12" release were cut directly from the original single-track tapes without the intervening tape duplication for mastering purposes. Processing for stereophonic reproduction was done at the mastering stage and the amount of equalization for each channel was determined in a way not to "improve upon" or alter the original sound.

(b)            The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           True stereo pressings of this release do not exist; this is an electronically rechannelled recording.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
