JEAN SHEPHERD "LIVE" AT THE LIMELIGHT
1965 / New York: Quote Records Q-4 (mono)
Vintage 12" 33rpm Vinyl Record Album
Condition: Beautiful vinyl -- approaches mint condition. Has been protected all these years in a audiophile lined inner sleeve. Jacket is very attractive with front panel retaining much of its original gloss, no distracting surface damage, and very minimal soiling. However there is significant serrating damage to the spine -- the other edges are flawless.
The rarest LP release by Jean Shepherd (1921-1999) on the short-lived Quote Records label, with liner notes by Paul Krasner, documenting his live performance in March 1965 at the Limelight Cafe in New York City's Greenwich Village.
With a career that spanned decades, Shepherd is best known to modern audiences for the film A Christmas Story (1983), which he narrated and co-scripted, based on his own semi-autobiographical stories.
He is today recognized as a forerunning stylistic influence on Spalding Gray and Garrison Keillor, and comedian Jerry Seinfeld credited him as well saying, "He really formed my entire comedic sensibility -- I learned how to do comedy from Jean Shepherd."
Others citing him as an influence include Bill Griffith for his Zippy comic strip, veteran New York Top 40 DJ Dan Ingram, and Steely Dan's Donald Fagen who identified the eponymous figure from his solo album The Nightfly as being based on Jean Shepherd.
