Label Conditions: Both in stunning conditions: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with just two or three ultra faint spindle traces on side one and just one on side two. An original mono record without doubt hardly even played.

Cat Number: SX 6293.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 147 grams. An excellent weight for this record.

Rarity: Quite rare in mono, especially so in this little played condition that offers superb, little short of perfect sound. That too with a superb cover and inner.

Brief Info: Brilliant debut album and a very early pressed original mono version on the classic turquoise Columbia label. Featuring a host of future superstars including a very young Rod Stewart and future Led Zeppelin maestro John Paul Jones, this vintage album must rank as one of Beck’s best ever. A wonderful mono copy too, without doubt, little played and sounding fantastic. Many forget what a brilliant rock vocalist Rod Stewart was before he went ‘Sailing’ and commercial. Hear him on this album at his very best.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): a single format with a laminated front, this wraps around all the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. A genuine mono cover that has the SX number and ‘Patents pending’ text next to the Garrod & Lofthouse imprint. It was of course printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: Another near top drawer cover from a high-quality collection, a superb front with a an intense black graphic that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. The laminate has an incredible shine and clarity and astonishingly, has barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling which is the news possible for such a dark cover. It gets even better: there is no lifting or blistering at all which would ruin the appearance of this amazing cover should any be present. Any creases are few and mainly very light with minimal visual impact and finding this front better on an original cover will prove immensely difficult.

Cover Back: Directly opposite to the front, this is predominately white and has no lamination protection hence many examples will often be very grubby and worn. This back has hardly any wear at all and any grubbiness, ageing or marks are almost minuscule. The flipbacks are solid and neat with just the odd minor rub or burr trace to the end which all are very clean and grime-line free. Back covers this tremendous age rarely will be seen much better and this complements the highly attractive front perfectly.

Top Edge: Totally unworn, very straight and fully laminated with no scuffs.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering. Record entered on this right outside edge.

Spine and Text: As close to mint as any spine ever gets: very solid, straight with no compression. The ends are lightly tapered in manufacture and the laminate is again totally unscuffed, shiny and clear, it goes without saying, all text is pristine as seen on my close-up picture.

Corners: Four supremely sharp and unworn corners.

Cover Summary: A magnificent all round example of this rare late 60’s mono cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This impressive item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-), this being harsh, this looks like new. It’s the original EMI ‘the greatest recording organisation in the world’ sepia type. Unlined and fragile but this has survived with no edge splits or tears – the reasson why?, simple, the original owner put the record in a replacement lined inner to offer ultimate protection to the record and as it happens, to the inner as well. This has not aged at all being ultra clean and fresh with no creasing, an unusually hardly any record impression. This early inner is the genuine one that came with this record, it too has the ‘Patents applied for’ text and these inners will seldom be found like this or better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): again being harsh, any surface marks are few and ultra faint and any minor blemishes seen under light are within the pressing itself and have NO sound whatsoever. A very fine visual copy and exceptional for a mono copy as we all know the dangers these faced in particular. Very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed on thick vinyl. Not a single penetrating mark or scratch, thus no pops or clicks – remember, just one jolt or drop from an old Dansette that tracked as massive weights, and the record is a near right-off. I doubt very much if this copy has ever been near such equipment. A copy only lightly played on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A lovely looking record that plays supremely well with nothing unwanted. Sound is very clean, dynamic and clear with no clipping, mono noises or pops and clicks. Totally focused and detailed sound that excelled even on clinical stereo equipment for which this was not really made. Nothing spoilt my delight in hearing this vintage gem again and this early mono pressing gave a superb performance. Stewart’s rasping vocals have an in-the-room quality and he rarely sounded better – one of rock’s most iconic singers and I still think his unique vocal was perfect for rock. Never the easiest record to even find on the famous blue labels and certainly never easy to find this clean especially in mono. Nothing at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this great album, the music flowed and captivated and tracking was effortless. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits my highest recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my Moth Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). The record(s) REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
