There was ten months between Surrealistic Pillow and After Bathing at Baxter's, and what a difference ten months made.
Bookending the year that psychedelia emerged in full bloom as a freestanding musical form, After Bathing at Baxter's was among the purest of rock's psychedelic albums, offering few concessions to popular taste and none to the needs of AM radio, which made it nowhere remotely as successful as its predecessor, but it was also a lot more daring.
The album also showed a band in a state of ferment, as singer/guitarist Marty Balin largely surrendered much of his creative input in the band he'd founded, and let Paul Kantner and Grace Slick dominate the songwriting and singing on all but one cut ("Young Girl Sunday Blues").
The group had found the preceding album a little too perfect, and not fully representative of the musicians or what they were about, and they were determined to do the music their way on Baxter's
Essentially, After Bathing at Baxter's was the group's attempt to create music that captured what the psychedelic experience sounded and felt like to them from the inside; on a psychic level, it was an introverted exercise in music-making and a complete reversal of the extroverted experience in putting together Surrealistic Pillow.
Toward that end, they were working "without a net," for although Al Schmitt was the nominal producer, he gave the group the freedom to indulge in any experimentation they chose to attempt, effectively letting them produce themselves.
Track Listing:
SIDE 1: STREETMASSE (The Ballad Of You & Me & Pooneil - A Small Package Of Value Will Come To You, Shortly - Young Girl Sunday Blues) / THE WAR IS OVER (Martha - Wild Tyme (H) / HYMN TO AN OLDER GENERATION (The Last Wall Of The Castle - Rejoyce)
SIDE 2: HOW SUITE IS IT (Watch Her Ride - Spare Chaynge) / SHIZOFOREST LOVE SUITE (Two Heads - Won't You Try / Saturday Afternoon)
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with moderate spindles (not too many) and no hole wear - played but not over-played and very well cared for
VINYL Visual: The surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and apart from some sleeve-removal hairlines, are practically unmarked - these hairlines have no audio consequence - the playback is superb
VINYL Audio: Plays beautifully throughout with a crystal clear and detailed vibrant sound - this MONO mix gives the LP a more pronounced, rough "garage" feel (which I love), more so than the STEREO mix and it also has a quieter cut - but even when cranked up to a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this masterpiece) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no loud clicks/pops and only the lightest touch of surface noise between some of the tracks and on "Saturday Afternoon" (very, very minor otherwise, a beautifully clean press). The whole LP plays throughout to a very high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear, no distortion, sounds great and is strictly graded EXCELLENT to (+) for audio - fantastic LP (and in my opinion, one of those albums where you really need both the MONO and STEREO as they feel quite different with the STEREO sounding decidedly more polished)
SLEEVE: The front laminated cover has also been very, very well cared for. The front laminate has a beautiful glass-like gloss with no rubbing or creasing and the unlaminated back is clean and unmarked. The edges and spine (which is 'pinched' at the top and bottom) have practically no wear whatsoever and all spine text is clear and bold - great sleeve - EXCELLENT+
and the original Decca inner is practically MINT - crisp, fresh, unmarked and beautifully white - barely touched
