There was ten months between Surrealistic Pillow and After Bathing at Baxter's, and what a difference ten months made.
Bookending the year that psychedelia emerged in full bloom as a free-standing musical form, After Bathing at Baxter's was among the purest of rock's psychedelic albums, offering few concessions to popular taste and none to the needs of AM radio, which made it nowhere remotely as successful as its predecessor, but it was also a lot more daring.
The album also showed a band in a state of ferment, as singer/guitarist Marty Balin largely surrendered much of his creative input in the band he'd founded, and let Paul Kantner and Grace Slick dominate the songwriting and singing on all but one cut ("Young Girl Sunday Blues").
The group had found the preceding album a little too perfect, and not fully representative of the musicians or what they were about, and they were determined to do the music their way on Baxter's
Essentially, After Bathing at Baxter's was the group's attempt to create music that captured what the psychedelic experience sounded and felt like to them from the inside; on a psychic level, it was an introverted exercise in music-making and a complete reversal of the extroverted experience in putting together Surrealistic Pillow.
Toward that end, they were working "without a net," for although Al Schmitt was the nominal producer, he gave the group the freedom to indulge in any experimentation they chose to attempt, effectively letting them produce themselves.

LABELS: EXCELLENT - clean, bright and unmarked but with a little spindle hole wear and numerous spindle markings. This copy has been well played but also extremely well cared for as is evident from the clean, practically unmarked surfaces and the sensational playback it still delivers (please see detailed audio assessment below)
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT+ The vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen and are practically unmarked (there are some (very) light hairlines but these have no audio consequence)
VINYL Audio: Plays beautifully throughout with a deep, rich, warm and detailed vibrant sound and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing, and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this masterpiece) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no loud clicks/pops and only the lightest touch of surface noise between some of the tracks. The sound quality is simply sensational throughout and the whole LP plays to a very high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion. Strictly graded EXCELLENT+ for audio this is a fantastic copy and even though it's obviously been frequently enjoyed it still sounds great and plays pretty much perfectly from start to finish - fantastic LP - west coat psychedelia at the peak of its powers - great stuff
SLEEVE: The front laminated cover has also been well cared for. The front laminate has a beautiful glass-like gloss with no rubbing and only two light half-moon creases towards the opening edge and the unlaminated back is clean and unmarked. The edges and spine have practically no wear whatsoever and all spine text is clear and bold - great sleeve - EXCELLENT+
