If you spent countless years trying to find a near mint copy of Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow" album in mono (which has a different mix and sounds much better than its stereo counterpart) and you thought it was a daunting task, just wait!!! Wait until you try to find their THIRD album ("AFTER BATHING AT BAXTERS") in mono!!! Than you will discover what daunting task REALLY means. Issued in late 1968, when the MONO format was all but clinically dead, this is one of the most difficult to find items in the entire RCA VICTOR catalogue . The copy of "AFTER BATHING AT BAXTER’S" I have on sale here, is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved copies I have seen in my 26 years of record collecting. The album is strong near mint, with only a few microscopic abrasions or paper scuffs which do not affect playing one bit. The mix is clearly different, particularly on some songs: I could not recognize one of the most memorable songs from the album ("Martha"). The stereo version I am familiar with, the one from the "Worst of..." compilation, is definitely different from the one you will find on this album. This version has Jack Cassady’s bass line pushed all the way to the front, as if it were the solo instrument, while the other instruments are pretty much relegated to the background. In addition, the original stereo version of the album contains the song "Young Girl’s Sunday Blues" in fake, rechannelled stereo, so this is your only chance to hear this great song it all its original (mono) glory. For many Jefferson Airplane aficionados, this is the band’s ultimate achievement and a true tour-de-force. By the time the album was issued, long gone were the hippie references, and the mirth-pills-and-grass aesthetics; the band adopted a much more aggressive and vigorous - but no less subtle - musical approach starting with this album. If you are unfamiliar with this great psych/west coast album, this is your chance to acquire a piece of history.
The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID)
(b) The record is believed to come in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.
(c) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 20:1.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
