Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are light, quite fine and very few, this appears hardly played and offers impressive clean sound.

Brief Info: A live album, the band’s first recorded at both the Fillmore East and West in the autumn of 1968 and released in 1969. An essential album as it includes five songs previously unissued on their previous titles. The familiar songs now sound very different with a much heavier sound and overall this is a terrific vintage recording. The interpretation of Donovan’s ‘Fat Angel’ is particularly interesting and the albums finale, ‘Bear Melt’ is an 11-minute improvisation where the band swap instruments. This quite early UK copy appears little played and offering near top sound with no pressing issues or flaws, never to taken for granted on the post-Decca RCA label that is very variable in terms of sound quality. The cover is clean as well and overall, this is a very clean and impressive example.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate. The wraps around the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The main back panel is unprotected with a matt, smooth finish. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Cover Front and Laminate: A very fine front that has lovely fresh, shiny and clear laminate with hardly any creasing or dulling, also practically fully adhered with a mere hint of a sliver lift on the spine edge. The right edge with the unprotected strip is also unworn, crisp and neat. Even under light, barely any marks to the super-smooth laminate surface which really is in fantastic condition.

Cover Back: Little to fault at all with minimal traces of any wear or rubbing. The lack of ring wear always great news. If my pictures appears very slightly out-of-focus, it is quite deliberate to avoid the moray pattern this, and similar lined covers always have when photographed. When you know how, this misleading photographic effect can be almost eliminated when taking photographs.

Top Edge: Smooth and unworn, not quite straight being thinly made, and laminate tends to pull over time. Still impressive however.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same and a little straighter.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Quite sharp with little wear and minimal thickening. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Quite solid and reasonably straight with only a little gentle natural bowing as many thin laminated covers do. A little fairly mild comparession with all the text present and well centred on quite a narrow depth. Three fine hairline creases only, the ends are tapered in manufacture.

Corners: The odd light tip crease but little else, very fine to excellent shape retained with barely any rubbing.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this classic late 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. With an exceptional shiny and fresh front, clean back and minimal edge wear, this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined open inner that has darkened with age but has little else to fault apart. Hardly any creasing, two crisp, neat window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This has the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface marks tiny, very fine and faint as seen under angled light – hardly anything of note at all. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Still possibly an unde-rappreciated album and that should not be. This captures the real edge of this psych-era band – the production a little raw, but it sounds just right for this time. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high within the limitations of a 1960s live recording with a good dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds register little and there are no pressing issues or flaws. Few copies will match or outperform this early British pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
