Jelly Roll Morton was the first great composer and piano player of Jazz. He was a talented arranger who wrote special scores that took advantage of the three-minute limitations of the 78 rpm records. But more than all these things, he was a real character whose spirit shines brightly through history, like his diamond studded smile.

He was an important transitional figure between ragtime and jazz piano styles. He played on the West Coast from 1917 to 1922 and then moved to Chicago and where he hit his stride. This record finds him in Chicago in a recording session on September 15, 1926. The songs here are "Black Bottom Stomp" and "The Chant." He used many different 'jazzy' names for his group and on this Victor Electric 78, it's credited to Jelly-Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers.

"Fickle Fay Creep" is from a session on October 9, 1930 and has him playing with a group that included Ward Pinkett, Geechie Fields, Eddie Scarpa, Bernard Addison, Billy Taylor, and Bill Beason.

This was his last session until he was interviewed by Alan Lomax in 1938.

"That'll Never Do" is from a session on March 5, 1930, and has him playing with Ward Pinkett, Wilbur de Paris, Ernie Bullock (or Jerry Blake), Bernard Addison, Billy Taylor and Cozy Cole.
