THE JENSEN SISTERS "Dancing In the Autumn Breeze" Accent Records (1978)
Don’t let that squeaky clean cutesie cover shot fool ya – the Jensen Sisters, with their matching Junior Sample garanimals and brushed-back Farrah Fawcett majorette hair, aren’t only “dancing in the autumn breeze,” they’re also getting off a few good Hendrix licks for the winter solstice and throwing in some fuzzed-out late 60’s garage band moves for the upcoming fall harvest as well. One look at that Rick Nielson-approved double neck electric axe should clue you in that these lovely lasses might be more Shaggs than Bugaloos, and they are, God bless ‘em.
You’d never know this was 1978 after listening to the groovy FUZZ guitar that permeates “You Lit The Fire” and I don’t think they’re talking about the campfire where they’re about to roast up some smores. And the liquidy Hendrix wah wah guitar that starts the title track makes you think these girls haven’t listened to much beyond 1968 either. Which makes ‘em even hotter in my book. Okay, so the lead vocals are about as clean and cute as a My Little Pony soaking in a tub of Mr. Bubble, but listen close and you’ll hear some mighty grown-up admissions among the angelic harmonies. “I can’t deny the way I wanna see you,” the Swiss Misses of Lenny Kaye’s fantasies sing on “I Can’t Deny.” “I can’t deny the way I wanna hold you the way I do in my dreams.”
As their Hello Kitty colored guitars spin, drip and cascade in liquidy caramel-coated tears over their marshmallow harmonies. So the little girls are having DREAMS now, are they? Well, I’ve got some too, ladies. And one of ‘em involves double-necked fuzz guitars, crude Shaggs backbeats and a trio of Nancy Drew lookalikes with Farrah Fawcett wings in an undisclosed and remote forest clearing where we can talk about obscure Hendrix outtakes, the merits of the Music Machine, and what three lonely riot grrrls would’ve done with Leif Garrett back in 1978. And it wouldn’t be dancing in no autumn breeze either.
