Description
JERRY GARCIA – Comin’ Up For Air. Pass To Dust Records LP 2294. Italian release. FACTORY SEALED NEW VINYL RECORD 2-LP SET. Issued in 2017. Comes in a single pocket jacket. Live at the Catalyst Club, Santa Cruz, California on October 16, 1985. Limited edition of 750 copies, approximately 100 copies pressed on color vinyl; as this (sealed) copy is not noted as color vinyl by my supplier I assume this is a black vinyl pressing. Previously issued as Santa Cruz Blues on CD in 1997. TRACKS: Deep Elum Blues, Friend Of The Devil, Jericho, She Belongs To Me, Jack A Row, Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie, Paint My Masterpiece, I’ve Been All Around This World, Run For The Roses,k Bird Song, Gammorah, and Ripple. DESCRIPTION: On October 16, 1985, Jerry Garcia and long time friend and bassist John Kahn did two short shows at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California. Comin’ Up For Air contains almost both complete sets; it is missing just one song, Rubin And Cherise, which ended the early show (the 1997 CD edition, Santa Cruz Blues, also omits this track). Also, on both releases Little Sadie is listed as Jericho. Great sound quality and a first time vinyl release for these live performances, limited to a press run of 750 copies, comes in a single pocket jacket.
For your further reading enjoyment and enlightenment I offer a track rundown of this release as posted on Michael Doherty’s Music Log:
I love acoustic Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia recordings, and so this disc is a treat. It’s just Jerry on guitar, and John on upright bass, and so has a loose and intimate feel. They kick off the early show with Deep Elem Blues, a song Jerry also did with the Grateful Dead (you can hear a good version on Reckoning). The version here is a bit messy, but still cool. They follow that with Friend Of The Devil, and it’s the slower version that the Dead did in concert. I love those moments when Jerry gets real quiet. Little Sadie follows, and is one of the highlights for me. The Grateful Dead did this song a few times in 1969, 1970, and 1980. Here it has the feel of being sung around a campfire, which works so well. And then I love Jerry’s delivery of Bob Dylan’s She Belongs To Me. Plus, that guitar part a few minutes in is excellent, making this track another of the set’s highlights. Jerry sang this one with the Grateful Dead a few times in 1985. And Jack-A-Roe is a song the Dead played at the very last show I ever saw (in Portland, 1995). The version here is okay. But it’s followed by an excellent rendition of Oh Babe, It Ain’t No Lie, a song written by Elizabeth Cotten. And, with Rubin And Cherise missing, that’s the end of the early show.
The late show opens with When I Paint My Masterpiece, a song that Bob Weir sang with the Grateful Dead. Jerry gives it a delicious energy, particularly in the vocals, and there is also a delightful jam. “Someday everything is gonna be different/When I paint my masterpiece.” That’s followed by a good rendition of I’ve Been All Around This World. Next up, it’s great to hear an acoustic version of Run For The Roses, a song that the Jerry Garcia Band often did, and I dig what John Kahn does on bass here. Then the crowd gets excited when they start Bird Song. You might not think there’d be a lot of jamming on this version, what with only two guys playing, but you’d be wrong. This is actually a seriously good rendition of Bird Song, with them taking it in some interesting directions. And it’s nearly ten minutes long. That’s followed by a really nice take on Gomorrah, a song from Cats Under The Stars. But of course for me the best track is the one that concludes the show, Ripple, my all-time favorite song. I never got the chance to see Jerry sing this one in concert; I wish I’d been at that show in Landover in 1988. This song works beautifully every time, and the rendition on this disc has a sweet feel to it. By the way, the sound of this recording is quite good, and though it is a radio broadcast, there are no interruptions or weird cuts.
THIS ITEM IS NEW AND UNPLAYED. Used items will include condition details for the cover, disc, inserts, etc.
If you have any questions or if you have additional information, especially corrections, to the description, please e-mail me. I particularly enjoy when an artist, band member, or someone who has personal background knowledge of a particular album/artist and offers their insight/information of that recording, which I will include with the description for future listings of that release. As a collector of many years, part of the hobby side for me is to learn about the background of the artists and music that I collect. Hopefully, sharing some of this information in my descriptions will help educate and enhance your listening experience.
All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers.

All packages are shipped via first class package international service (air); this is the least expensive method of shipping internationally, but does not necessarily meet all the conditions of Paypal’s buyer/seller protection plan. First Class Package International Service does not offer tracking. NOTE: First Class Package International Service has a 4 lb. weight limit, if your purchase exceeds that weight limit the next cheapest option is Priority Package International Service (usually up to 4 LPs will have a total weight less than 4 lbs.). Though quicker and safer, Priority Package International Service is determined at a higher rate than First Class Package International Service. If security is a major concern then please request Registered Mail, available upon request and at your expense, this is the least expensive method of providing extra security for your package and it allows the US post office to internally track your package should it become lost (I have yet to have a package lost via this method); actual postal charge for registration is $13.95 in addition to the shipping total (required on all bids/purchases totaling $100 or more; this will be included with the invoiced shipping total). Priority Mail International and Express Priority Mail International are available upon request and at your expense. If you have any special needs of your purchase or you have any questions please e-mail me.
RETURN POLICY:
Please e-mail me with specific details and I will get back to you with your options. I ask that if there is a problem with the item that you contact me as soon as possible after receiving it. Any item that must be returned is done so at the buyer’s expense. Any refund, exchange, or substitution/credit will be at the buyer’s choice, but not made until the original item is received back by me; in the condition as stated in the item description.
NON-ARRIVAL OF PACKAGES:
US Customers: Please wait at least two weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. All packages are shipped with confirmation/tracking, you will received an automatically generated shipping notice from Ebay e-mail with your tracking number. It has been several years since I’ve had a package not make its US destination, so risk is minimal.
INTERNATIONAL Customers: Please wait at least 3 weeks from my confirmed shipping date before contacting me about the non-arrival of your package. If security is your concern please have your package registered (see above for fee). I do my best to quickly post packages, but once the package is in the hands of the world’s postal system it is beyond my control. With First-Class Package International Service my only option for investigating the loss of your package is to verify that it left this country to its destination country. Most all delayed/lost packages have disappeared/been delayed after they have reached their destination country. NOTE: Based on recent buyer feedback, International packages have been moving much slower these days; it is not unusual for a package to take over three weeks for delivery, though normally packages should arrive in 7 to 15 business days.
ALL CUSTOMERS: If there is a problem with your purchase please e-mail me first with details before filing a resolution. I will file a non-payment resolution if payment is not received within 7 days of your purchase unless you contact me with your needs. However if, for any reason, you decide not to follow through with your purchase please avoid a non-payment resolution and initiate a cancellation of the sale; this is not a problem to which I will gladly respond in acceptance.
