IF YOU ASK ME (BECAUSE I LOVE YOU) / YVONNE ... 7-inch, 45rpm single by JERRY WILLIAMS aka SWAMP DOGG arranged and produced by R. ROME. Original US 1st pressing on CALLA label (116), from circa 1966. Desirable Northern soul with a big wall of sound on the stomping IF YOU ASK ME BECAUSE I LOVE YOU anthem. A personal favourite of Pete Lawson (the rare soul collector / DJ and man behind The Gospel According To Dave Godin magazine). The confusing / different issues of this Wigan Casino floorfiller is a bit of minefield but our copy is indeed the original '60s 1st press with Bell Sound and star shaped stamp in the deadwax run-out and correct 1650 Broadway NYC address (same as the mythical promo) released before the later pressings with label artwork changes that show the more common 1631 Broadway or 17 West 60th Street address of the 1973 repress. The original 1st issue is actually in flat edged styrene (a detail that previous sellers never seem to mention). Loud production and great for DJs with an infectious groove / big strings / catchy female harmony backing and fabulous lead vocals by the legendary Swamp Dogg singing under his Jerry Williams pseudonym. The general consensus would appear to be that the mix / arrangement of the 1st issue is the best of all. Shades of the psychedelic soul sound to our ears and easily one of the hottest tunes from the independent New York based label run by Nate McCalla (the ex bodyguard for Morris Levy of Roulette / latin Tico label infamy). The seldom heard YVONNE side is a sweet soul ballad. We have recorded both sides for our soundclip, opening with the brilliant IF YOU ASK ME... Seldom comes up for sale on mainland Europe. Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG 

Flat edged styrene record is in shiny, VG++ condition overall regardless of the small scratch that causes some ticks to the intro of the "Yvonne" side. Some hairlines / light scuffs elsewhere from storage. Surface noises (also to be expected for such a pressing) and a few other pops / ticks in places (as you can also hear on our soundclip). Loud production sound. Pen notations to both sides of label. Label wear / ink bleeding and drill hole (see photo). Record will be housed in white card sleeve with brand new poly lined inner. Very rare 45!!!
