A great complete pressing of this classic Tull rarity in great condition!
Recorded at Island Records' studio in London, it was their first album with John Evan as a full-time member, their first with new bassist Jeffrey Hammond and last album featuring Clive Bunker on drums. Something of a departure from the band's previous work, the album features more acoustic material than previous releases; and — inspired by photographs of homeless people on the Thames Embankment taken by singer Ian Anderson's wife Jennie — contains a number of recurring themes, addressing religion along with Anderson's own personal experiences.
Aqualung has sold over 7 million worldwide, and is Jethro Tull's best selling album. The album was generally well-received critically, and has been included on several music magazine best of lists. The album spawned one single, "Hymn 43", and has been cited as an inspiration by bands such as Iron Maiden.
The album was one of the first to be recorded at the newly opened studios of Island Records in Basing Street, London. Led Zeppelin were recording their untitled fourth album at the same time. There were two recording studios at the location; Led Zeppelin worked in the smaller studio while Tull got the larger, which was the main body of a converted church.
The initial idea for the album was sparked by some photographs that Anderson's wife Jennie took of homeless people on the Thames Embankment. The appearance of one man in particular caught the interest of the couple, who together wrote the title song "Aqualung". The first side of the LP, titled Aqualung, contains several character sketches, including the eponymous character of the title track, and the schoolgirl prostitute Cross-Eyed Mary, as well as two autobiographical tracks, including "Cheap Day Return", written by Ian Anderson after a visit to his critically ill father.
Allmusic give the album four-and-a-half stars out of five, calling it "a bold statement" and "extremely profound". Steve Harris, the bass player of Iron Maiden, has called Aqualung "a classic album", lauding its "fantastic playing, fantastic songs, attitude [and] vibe". Iron Maiden would go on to cover "Cross-Eyed Mary" as the B-side of their 1983 single "The Trooper".
Aqualung is now considered one of the great records of the period, and a pivotal moment in Tull's career.
ALBUM PLAYED FOR GRADING:
Yes – brilliant! - TOP AUDIO
An original pressing with Archive Sound. AQUALUNG is an early JETHRO TULL masterpiece and is also a sensitive piece of vinyl. Worn copies can have a lot of surface sound even on the many musically complex sections. I am a huge fan of this album and also highly critical of the audio performance. I just cant stand to hear a pressing that is worn or plays with anything other than great clear sound. Like most Tull albums, there is a wide mix of music, stylistically and audio wise, making it near impossible to find original pressings that are not covered in surface noise, pops and clicks.
I am very pleased to say that this rare pressing plays through with great, very bright un disturbed clear audio. This great record plays up to the high visual grading and beyond. It really is a tremendous example. Strong sound free of any loud pops or clicks, it has been very little played. The channels are clean and unstressed and there is not even a hint of distortion anywhere on the record. There is very little occasional static, and that is incredibly rare for any vinyl. The occasional very light static tic, but nothing prominent or repetitive or really that noticeable. The audio plays through with brilliant strong and clear sound. This is a great 1st press of this Tull classic, and even with a few very light spots of interference in the form of very light static, it is a stunning listen. I will give a detailed account below:
This great sounding record starts with surprisingly little static in that famously intro. By any standards its unbelievably clear. Here the opening bars are just crystal clear. Building up with 'Aqualung ' this great track starts the record with great audio, just great bright sound. No pops or clicks and very clear between tracks. 'Cross Eyed Mary' continuous the high standard, with near perfect audio. A couple of very light static tics only, and no pops or clicks.
The beautiful 'Cheap Day Return', such a hard track for Aqualung, nearly always prone to heavy wear, here sounds great. No loud pops or clicks during the music. Just one or two occasional light static tics only and very little detectable static. Amazing for such a delicate track. 'Mother Goose' also sounds great, with great audio. A silent intro, it plays with great sound, with barely any background static, and this is another quiet track always prone to heavy static and loud pops and clicks. Truly incredible sound. Another delicate Tull classic, 'Wondering Aloud' sounds brilliant, so great to hear such amazing audio giving justice to such classic music. There are a few static tics at the start but very little surface sound. A couple of light tics between the tracks, 'Up to Me' rounds off side 1. with great audio. A bit of faint background static only, no loud pops or clicks and great clear sound. Superb sound from this original pressing. Super clear sound and barely any obvious static as the album progresses.
Side 2. of
Aqualung virtually always starts of with heavy static. There are a couple of minutes of very quiet music, and there is nearly always a lot of surface noise. Here there is some light background static, but it is light. There are no loud pops or clicks and the track plays with bright clear audio. The track 'My God' plays without a single loud pop or click throughout. Here the sound is so deep and powerful and plays with very sharp top vinyl sound! 'Hymn 43' plays with very clear sound, it really sounds great, with no loud pops and minimal static. There are a few random static tics and some very slight static. In the long quiet intro to 'Slipstream', it plays with no distortion and really clear audio, even during the quietest sections. I heard a couple of light dust pops in the middle of the track, and some tics during the introduction. There is not a hint of distortion anywhere on this great record. The long jazz piano intro to 'Locomotive Breath' plays really well, as does the whole track. Great clear sound and there is not a hint of distortion anywhere on any tracks of this vinyl. There is some light static at the start during the quiet intro and a few tics. Side 2. ends with the great 'Wind Up'. The long intro of this quiet track is virtually always plagued by unwanted noise. Here it sounds superb, with no loud pops or clicks, there is some light static during the quiet sections but nothing obtrusive.
The record plays with staggering power, great audio with minimal interference to distract from the enjoyment of this great record. There is little surface or static noise between the tracks. There is the occasional light dust tic, and one or two random very light pops, but they are light and certainly nothing loud or repetitive.
The music jumps out, with definition and clarity, particularly on the percussion instruments, and vocals, which come through with tremendous power. As is the same with the bass and drums, whilst the guitars come through crisp and clear. On the whole this lp plays with superb, clear bright audio. I have given a detailed account and l believe I have been unforgiving in pointing out the slightest audio interference on what is a tremendous 1st ever pressing of this rare example.
I would easily give an overall audio grading of EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT PLUS!
THE RECORD – Visual Grading
A stunning piece of glossy vinyl, this rare 1st press is really thick and chunky, with amazing deep clear grooves. When viewed directly under a spot light can a couple of faint whispy paper handling marks and a few ultra light hairlines can be seen, and they are really light and need to be seen under an intense spotlight. A really wonderful example that has clearly been little played!
A really great example. Grades at EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT!
THE LABELS
A lovely set of labels, unmarked with a few light spindle traces on each side. A lovely set, they have no spindle wear, and certainly no writing, finer prints or other marks.
Grading at EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT!
VINYL TESTED FOR ANY SIGNS OF WARPING:
Yes, NONE visible what so ever when tested be sight and on a moving turntable.
THE COVER
The album's original cover art by Burton Silverman features a watercolour portrait of a long haired, bearded man in shabby clothes. The idea for the cover came from a photograph Anderson's wife took of a homeless man on Thames Embankment, and Anderson later felt it would have been better to have used the photograph rather than commission the painting. Ian Anderson recalls posing for a photograph for the painting, though Silverman claims it was a self-portrait. 1st press covered came with textured surface on the outer faces, (also prone to wear) and also a textured surfaces on the inside gatefold. This original pressing cover comes with its original lightly textured cover in simply stunning condition. The Matt finish News paper covers of Aqualung have to be one of the most prone to wear, of all the classic vinyls from the sixties and early seventies. Being matt finish and not having the advantage of being laminated, these covers usually faired pretty badly, with serious ring wear and scuffed along the edges, the pages torn and heavily worn. The Spines are nearly always torn, worn and scuffed. And they are nearly always heavily rubbed, cracked and other grubby marks. Not this one!
I would have to say it would be difficult to ever find a better example. And don't be fooled, these 1st press covers are completely different to all other covers from the UK pressings of AQUALUNG. These covers themselves are rare, and so hard to find with out heavily worn edges, corners and surfaces.
The Cover has absolutely minimal wear to the corners, and virtually no rubbing along the edges, and that is virtually un heard of for Aqualung. The opening edges are very square and totally un frayed, with NO detectable ring wear on either the rear or front cover, again unheard of. The back cover is nice and clean, again with no impression of the vinyl. The inside Gatefold is clean and virtually unmarked . The Spine shows minimal wear only, and shows barely any wear at the edges. Quite unbelievable. All round, this is a really amazing example that is largely unmarked. And, this is an ORIGINAL 1st Press COVER, textured on all faces.
Grades at EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT.
THE INNER
Original picture inner sleeve in EXCELLENT PLUS to NEAR MINT condition. No tears, stains, just some light creasing and NO seem splits at all!!!
And these are completely different to all other inner sleeves from the UK pressings of Aqualung. So hard to find with out heavy wear, graffiti, tears and splitting. A great example.
RARITY
Finding an original UK pressing of AQUALUNG in great condition is extremely rare indeed. It is one of the hardest pieces of vinyl from the early 1970's to find with great audio.
The cover is almost impossible to find without serious wear, even modestly worn examples are scarce and this is one of the best example I've seen. Finding a great cover like this, with a great piece of vinyl, fantastic!.
An AQUALUNG pressing in this type of condition is scarce. The vinyl is so often played so much, heavily marked, scratched, with noisy, poor and distorted sound. Any AQUALUNG examples with a record in this type of condition, that plays superbly is very rare. An ORIGINAL press, with ORIGINAL 1st Press Cover and ORIGINAL inner sleeve, all in great condition, with TOP audio makes this very rare indeed!

VINYL SOUND - PLEASE NOTE:
Highest quality vinyl with clear sound is rare, and what we always aim for. We only sell records that play with TOP AUDIO performance; super clear sound uninterrupted by hiss or other interference. Even with the cleanest pressing you will find occasional static or occasional light tics during playback, caused by a build of dust in the grooves. This is clearly different from the distortion, loud pops, repeating tics or clicks that are found on heavily played and worn pieces of vinyl. Any static build up will reduce when played, and we advise a light clean between plays for optimal performance.
