I AM OFFERING ANOTHER HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER PROG / PSYCH ROCK VINYL LP RARITY FROM MY COLLECTION OF SIMILAR ITEMS !! THIS IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST PROG ALBUMS EVER MADE IT WILL DEFINITELY BE IN THE TOP TEN BEST PSYCH/PROG ALBUMS EVER CONCEIVED!!!!!!HARD TO FIND AS A FIRST PRESS THESE DAYS. THIS IS THE CHRYSALIS/ISLAND LABEL WHICH IS THE ONLY ORIGINAL FIRST PRESS ISSUE FOR THIS CLASSIC ALBUM. THE PALM TREE IS SLIGHTLY LATER AND FROM A DIFFERENT PRESSING PLANT BUT RARE.
Jethro Tull's third LP is another classic. Benefit was the final album to feature the late great Glenn Cornick on bass. Following up the sensational Stand Up album was a hard act to pull off, but Benefit succeeds with flying colors. Memorable acoustic and electric gems fill the album including "With You There To Help Me", "Nothing To Say", "Inside", "Son", "To Cry You A Song", "A Time For Everything" and "Play In Time". A somewhat underrated album in the Jethro Tull cannon but it is right up there with their best work. Ian Anderson continued to showcase the genius he is on Benefit. At this point, Ian clearly established himself as one of the best song writers in rock. An absolute must for Tull fans.
Vinyl: EX+. A smashing heavy first press vinyl with just one wispy shallow hairline under a strong light. The vinyl looks NM without any marks or lines and has a fantastic glossy sheen not often seen for this album. The audio is splendid and the stereo separation supreme!! I have played this on my high end Linn/Rotel/B&W system. Of course NO jumps, sticks or skips. Just some light static on the deadwax in between tracks.
Sleeve: EX. Hard to find this sleeve in such great condition as it is just so flimsy! The colours are still splendid and the edges dead straight . One or two tiny thumb creases and a totally crisp opening. The spine is 100% readable. No splits or tears and no writing. A supreme sleeve worthy of a great prog collection.
I agree that this album is hugely underrated - Ian Anderson is an incredible recording artist, one of the very best ever - and Benefit along with the first half of Passion Play are in my opinion his two greatest and two of the best progressive rock/pop records of all time - (check out the Steven Wilson remix for both).
I recommend listening to the whole album in sequence. There is a vitality that to me says that this man was born to make this album, and his youthful energy comes through his masterful writing and performance, including his beautiful voice - I also love Cat Steven's singing - and his band perfectly accomplishes his vision.
I will also go out on a limb and say that "Inside" is one of the finest pop songs ever written, and my favourite song. If you love great music you must listen to this song!
