Label/Format: Chrysalis – early green matt format with a fairly deep inner ring ridge. The important i Island logo on the label rims is present as can be seen on my scan.

Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only a couple of faint spindle marks on side one and light very light use on side two. These spindle marks have very low visibility and only really shows under angled light. It will be hard to find an Island logo copy with fewer plays than this.

Cat Number: ILPS 9123.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 133 grams. About average for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Much harder to find on Chrysalis with the original Island number and logo. Later Chrysalis pressings had their own Chrysalis number and are much more easily found.

Original Year of Release: 1970. The original inner sleeve that is date coded 0672 indicates this is a summer pressing from 1972, so still an early issue put into true context.

Matrix Nos: ILPS 9123 A // 2 1 1 5 and ILPS 9123 B // 1 1 1 1 (the last ‘1’ could possibly be a ‘7’).

Musicians: Ian Anderson - vocals, guitar and flute; Martin Barre - electric guitar; Glenn Cornick - bass guitar; Clive Bunker - drums. John Evan - piano and organ (then as a guest).

Brief Info: Another brilliant set, their third, from a band that could do no wrong at this time. The stunning opening track sets the tone, a superb rocking track with some blistering guitar blended with Anderson’s flute that flips from channel to channel and the high standard never lets up throughout. It may have been deemed impossible to match their first two albums but ‘Benefit’ falls little short. This very early Island-Chrysalis pressing still includes the Island matrixes and numbers and is far harder to find than all Chrysalis copies. For sound, this record will not be beaten easily and offers fantastic audio quality, all evidence suggests this one has hardly been played and was a delight from beginning to end.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: High – very prone to ring wear and rubbing. The early examples had a flat matt finish, later examples were quite different with a more glossy finish varnished finish that made them more durable.

Cover Grade and Format: Very Good++. A single unlaminated design that was printed and made in England by MacNeill Press Ltd and includes the original ILPS 9123 (Island) number. Later examples were made by Gothic Print Finishers and the ILPS number was changed. If these MacNeill Press covers look a little more ‘aged’ or worn, its simply because they are older, flimsier and more vulnerable.

Cover Front: Some light rubbing is evident under angled light along with a few very mild surface creases. Some rubbing on the spine fold shows more along with a little edge rubbing encroaching into view. Still an attractive front with the lack or ringwear, sticker marks and ink erosion being a major plus.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same minus any real visual edge rubbing.

Top Edge: Light, patchy surface rubs.

Bottom Edge: Moderate, more consistent rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear and no feathering and guaranteed, untrimmed. Record entered on this right edge.

Spine and Text: The top edge fold has patchy rubbing. Solid, but quite thin with some compression. Delighted to state, all text is present and unworn and this too includes the prized ILPS Catalogue number.

Corners: All have rubbed to moderate degree with a little creasing and mainly fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: Still an attractive all round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that could prove quite difficult to find much better. These matt finished early examples rarely wore well and in context this is a very decent example with the main faces looking highly respectable. It will please many collectors but not the more discerning this time. The super record more than compensates however.

The Inner Sleeve: The Polydor-style polylined inner as stated above is date-coded 0672, so this guarantees the exact vintage of this early copy. Not a very first, but the Island-Chrysalis examples were not available too long. This inner is in super condition and aged little. Mild toning to the glue on the seams only and the window itself is pristine with perfect circles and clear, solid lining. All edges secure and barely any noteworthy creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Strong EX: a very attractive visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed, much heavier than later pressings. A copy that shows nothing more than very fine surface marks when put to angled light – they have no sound and are merely superficial handling or removal blemishes. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: One of my very favourite Jethro Tull albums and this lovely record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed, powerful sound. This album has a tremendous mix and stereo imagery and was a delight to hear again. Any surface sounds barely even registered and just a couple of faint ticks were noted on the entire duration, not bad for a record fast approaching 40 and this is a fine very early pressing with the Island matrixes and number. Few copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Although the fragile cover has a little storage wear, the record has none of any significance and truly looks modestly played. This actual record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
