'Another from my personal collection! Collected over a period of 35 years I have accumilated more than 49,000 albums alone mainly UK pressings! This original has been stored in a case for the best part of 25 years!! ,, With the vinyl seperated from the sleeve and cover the way that I have always stored my vinyls!!Please note! Most that know the type of records that I normally list on this site are very near perfect, I have decided to list this album more for the fact of its rarety rather than condition, There is general ware and tare, but having said that the audio is truly exceptional with very very minimal interfearance (without and loud clicks or pops) and very playable and enjoyable, and of coarse the original and earliest ''MONO''. (In my personal opinion the only way to hear this awesome debut album)! I have a few original copies of this album and have compared the mono with stereo many times! Points to note the mono mix is different to the stereo and much rarer and more sought after! This is highly collectable being totally original and the earliest with the 'earliest' textured pink Island labels and carries the 'A' and 'B' matrix endings! The vinyl being the thickest and heavier type with deeper grooves! The cover is the original MONO (very wide spined) type unique with its 'Wide internal flipbacks''!!!

You will see many label variations of this pressing, THIS PRESSING IS AND WAS THE 1ST ! WITH TEXTURED LABELS AND IN THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER IN MONO!  

'This Was'' (1968) is the first album by the rock band Jethro Tull. Recorded at a cost of only £1200 GBP, the album was definitely the work of amateurs on the rock music scene; however, the album received generally favorable reviews and sold well upon its release. In the documentary film of the Woodstock Festival, portions of the song "Beggar's Farm" may be heard on the PA system, indicating that the album had achieved some notice in the United States. The album achieved number 10 on the UK Album Chart!!!!.

Unlike their later albums, vocalist Ian Anderson shared songwriting chores with guitarist Mick Abrahams. The album overall has more of a rhythm and blues feel than the progressive rock feel the band is better known for!!!!.

This album also contains the only Jethro Tull song not sung by Ian Anderson, "Move On Alone." which had horns worked by David Palmer. Mick Abrahams sings vocals on this song!!!!!.

Abrahams left the group following this album!!!!.

The album includes a cover version of the jazz tune "Serenade to a Cuckoo" by Roland Kirk, whose flute technique was an influence on Anderson!!!!!.

The Vinyl

This is the MEGA heavier and thick type of vinyl only found on early pressings later are much more flimsier and less robust!!!! Also from my experience the thick vinyls produce the best audio quality!!!!!

On initial inspection the vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable!! The vinyl retains its original glossy sheen from new and looks AWESOME\superbe for an unbelievable 40 years old!!!In very strong light there are surface marks\scuffs\scratches that can be seen. After playing this vinyl track for track these have very little effect on the truly awesome audio !!I played this through two times prior to listing at very loud volume on a top system!!! This plays through cristal clear and vibrant throughout with (very importantly no) signs of grooveware or that this has been overplayed !!! I heard no major problems and rate the audio absolutely superbe!!!!Please note! Please allow for very (very) light static crackle (not consistant through out the audio and the odd  static ticks\crackle here and there in fact I only really ever noticed this on two or three quiet tracks on side A mostly. I must emphisise that I heard (no) other major problems at all!!!!! I heard (no) loud clicks or pops and certainly (no) jumps or skips at all!!!! I would class myself as highly critical! Please look at my completed listings of records that i have solds of this calaber and you will see that i normally get it right!!!!!! Truly superbe for an original 40 year old vinyl!!!!!! TOP TOP CRISTAL CLEAR AUDIO ON ALL FREQUENCIES with just the lightest static crackle\ticks in some places!!!

Points to note! I have played this vinyl at very loud volume using a top system!  I always add this disclaimer! I have given my very honest opinion on the audio quality as I heard it! Please allow for the odd very (very) light static crackle here and there and perhapes the light static ticks\clicks (not) consistant throughout the audio!! Please remember this is a genuine 40 year old vinyl that would have been played on a 40 year old system!!!!!

The Labels

These are the original 'PINK ISLAND (TEXTURED)LABELS'' With the original 'BLACK ORANGE 'CIRCLE' LOGO (ONLY 1ST PRESSINGS) in awesome condition for 40 years old. Spidering can be seen only when angled in light!!!!

The cover

This is the original  1ST PRESS LAMINATED WIDE SPINED (MONO) GATEFOLD COVER  Has general light ware or marks  with age but rare in awesome condition for an original 40 year old cover!!!!Amaizingly ,, (Very minimal) creasings to the laminate and is strong and straight with no splits or tares!!!There is light general storageware in the form of rubbing ware with  age only really noticable at the bottom corner of the spine and at the back edge of the spine if looked for  (see photos)Points to note! This is super lovely and glossy features the super large internal flipbacks (only found on 1st press) and the LARGE\WIDE SPINE in exceptional condition (see photos) The writing can be seen clearly!! !!!!!
