Label Conditions: All very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule. This double set appears hardly played.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Moderately scarce, especially with a clean cover and records hardly played. Pressing quality is always a major factor for this album, to date, I have never heard a ‘perfect’ copy. So many seem to have inherent pressing issues or noise. This overall is a very fine copy with three of the four sides very impressive with little to fault at all. Side two has a little light surface sound here-and-there and mostly confined to between the songs. Any on the music areas little and light with most lost in the sound. Although not pristine, this is still one of the finest overall copies I have heard, certainly in a long time, little spoilt my pleasure in hearing one of my favourite Jethro Tull albums again on the vinyl source.

Brief Info: A superb double album featuring a small few album tracks, but mostly comprising of singles and EP songs that were not released on their previous albums, side three was recorded live. Beautifully packaged with fantastic band pictures inside, this one made to look like a book. This one has the card covers – some were made very thick and usually wear less well. The records were stored inside two areas inside which remain fully intact with no splits, that somewhat unusual now. Great songs from their golden period, and this one plays mostly very well, as stated I have never heard a perfect copy of this set, any surface sound little and light on side two with most lost in the music. So I copy I enjoyed thoroughly, but if anyone wants total perfection or ‘silence’, this is not quite it. But this will not prove easy to find much better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): (with a three letter initial on the inside back cover). A matt cover made like a book, the covers on this one are the standard card thickness. The inside has 20 pages of graphics, many in full colour as-seen. Two areas act as the inner sleeves and are fragile and not lined. Both are fully intact with no splits (I suggest store the records out of these areas to keep them that way). Printed and made in England by Cavendish Press Ltd.

Cover Front: The odd small tip rub apart, there is little else to fault on this splendid clean front that is hardly marked or creased with no sticker issues. Not seen many finer than this.

Cover Back: Largely the same and again very impressive. These card versions seldom escape often heavy creasing and rubbing.

Cover Inner Gatefold & Book: The 20 page book is held on to the main cover with three original staples, two of which are punched into the spine. So all pages are very solid, clean and uncreased and look fantastic. As stated, the two storage areas intact and neat, they open on the top. The inside covers are both clean and hardly worn, the back has a three letter initial near the top, the only blemish of any real note on the entire item.

Top Edges: The cover ends have gently thickened, but in a neat way, all the book edges are mostly crisp and neat all round.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: And again.

Spine and Text: Being single thickness card, this has tilted to the right, but is not crushed or compressed as such. Still quite solid, straight with minimal actual compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The surface and text is unworn and both punched staples robust and solid.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creases on the right ends small/tiny and light, the spine ends are neat and hardly worn at all. Very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this fragile, classic 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors, the three letters inside the only relatively minor issue for some.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual pair that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, mostly very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually super records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality double album mostly plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed on three sides with any heard mostly light on side two here-and-there, mostly between tracks with any present on the music largely lost, any audible traces, mostly only gentle and light. There are no tracking issues* and although not pristine, this is still one of the finest and most enjoyable all-round copies I have heard in years. Few available copies will outperform this I feel sure. I am certain this album has been played very lightly and has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little overall spoilt my pleasure whilst play-grading. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, but not for absolute purists who demand virtual silence. I still await finding a copy of this album that offers that.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
