Songs From The Wood, which saw Ian Anderson donning the green mantle of some capricious, cavorting poacher cum Puck-like character, just sneaks it as my favourite Jethro Tull album. This is definitely personal preference rather than a critical choice. The band effortlessly slipped into the new guise as if they’d been searching for it from the beginning. It does become very Morris Dancers and Maypoles at times but mostly it manages to pay compliment to the genre without ever becoming too hokum.
The album couldn't be farther away from the prevailing musical trend of punk, thus ensuring it was immediately unfairly reviled by press and public alike. Just because a musical genre loses popularity and relevance doesn't indicate any loss of quality. Unfortunately, for albums like Songs From The Wood released during such times, they are not re-evaluated and appreciated until well after the event.
Musically, the band have rarely sounded better with a number of quite stunning interludes - "Songs From the Wood", "Pibroch (Cap In Hand)", "Hunting Girl", "Fires At Midnight" - but it's the whole concept that is admirable for its passion and ingenuity.
