Label Conditions: Both quite fresh, clean and attractive with spindle marks very fine and less than moderate in number. Only really seen under angled light.

Weight of this Record: 166 grams. A very heavy pressing and impressive weight for this record. This above average even for a first issue Island.

Rarity: Quite rare as a genuine first pressing, the orange eyeball format was changed within this year to the pink ‘block’format and then again to the pink i style that is the most familiar of the ‘three pinks’. Most are seen on the pink rim or later formats and this I deem even rarer than the ‘This Was’ debut on this label as it was available so very briefly.

Brief Info: Within the genre of ‘classic’ rock, there are few better albums than this second Jethro Tull set. Everything about this album is perfect – great songs, sublime packaging, fantastic sound and performance and issued on one of the best labels ever – no collection is complete without a copy of ‘Stand Up’. Following the brilliant debut album, Mick Abrahams departed for form Blodwyn Pig, this was never going to be easy, but the band rose to even greater heights. Beautifully packaged with it’s ‘working’ pop-up woodcut design cover, the details on the front are little short of remarkable as I hope my close-up pictures show. Musically, for me anyway, this is Jethro Tull’s best album, not a second of wasted time, every track is sublime and beautifully recorded too. Blending heavy and mellow songs with gorgeous instrumentation including strings, the details hidden within these vintage grooves are never-ending. The ultimate first pressing with a very heavy, thick record with deep wide grooves with no space wasted on the playing areas. Overall, this still offers impressive sound quality that has minimal wear and any surface sound mainly light and infrequent. This can never be taken for granted on these types, an album with many flute parts and this instrument often can distort or clip on overplayed copies, and let’s face it, many, if not most of the early ones were. Often used on less than worthy equipment that often damaged those delicate grooves. Just enough to politely remind of it’s considerable age but little spoilt my pleasure when hearing this again, that said, this is not for the audiophile purist who only want pristine sound whatever the cost. The cover shows far less wear than many I have seen, and the pop-up in the centrefold is pretty much pristine. So a copy that has been played a few times, but still a hugely respectable very early example that will please many.

Cover’s Potential for Wear (and Damage): Very high: the delicate pop-up bends and tears easily and always nice to see one in practically pristine condition. The cover’s back is seldom seen devoid of heavy grubbiness, ring wear and ageing and this has little – few will ever avoid it especially with the heaviest pressings inside all these years. This is a very nice all-round copy that gives high justice to this evergreen classic.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with the original ‘pop-up’ cut-out feature inside (this is detail part beautiful and little short of as made). Printed and made in England, uncredited.

Cover Front: The beautiful woodcut and incredibly detailed graphic looks impressive with any rubbing little and light. Most of any wear near the corners and the lack of creasing always a bonus. It retains a lovely yellowish-hue colour and little detracts from this vintage cover.

Cover Back: Now to one of rock’s most unforgiving backs: this is rarely seen devoid of major grubbiness, ring wear and general wear. Although not perfect, this is still in very fine condition and more than complements that lovely front. Any traces of grubbiness or darkening are light and far less than most I have seen and it could prove hard to find a great deal better with a massive first issue record inside. The lack of ring wear unusual, but most welcome. So just enough to remind this is a 44-year-old cover, and personally, I have few issues with that.

Cover Inner Gatefold: I am not going to waste time and lots of text on this centrefold. Simply because it’s little short of immacualte and little short of as made. The pop-up feature is nigh-on pristine, folds up and down perfectly and is crisp, uncreased or thickened. This fragile working part will seldom be seen better on such an early cover, it has never come unstuck or been ‘repaired’, hopefully my pictures will do the talking.

Top Edges: Quite light to moderate rubbing (ends), but still very straight.

Bottom Edges: Light+ to moderate patchy rubbing on these storage edges that will rarely escape some wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are quite sharp and neat with minimal thickening or burring. Record enters on the back, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Very solid, straight with minimal compression. The cover is folded square meaning the edges are flush and parallel, this not always the case on this cover, this fact always makes for a neater appearance of the whole cover. The text is largely all present with any rub traces very light and faint, a little rubbing to the ends and some gentle discolouration on the white surface, again few avoid it.

Corners: All corners have rubbed to a moderate degree or a little more. Around fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: As stated above, enough to politely remind of age, this cover rarely wears too well unless kept in cottonwool. Still a fine example that will please many collectors wanting an early copy, but not for the perfectionists of course. This came to me with a polylined inner that is UK patented with Foreign Patents Pending text. This more very good with a little ageing and some corner creasing. The window circles crisp and the lining clear, all edges sound and solid with no repairs needed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): a thick heavy first issue that still looks attractive with only mainly light surface marks seen under bright angled light. Wide and deep grooves on a record with substantial pressing weight. Clearly played several times but this has no nasty penetrating scratches and retains a fine shine and intense blackness. This considerably rarer first pressed record will please many collectors, but like the cover, not for the highly discerning.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic album plays mostly above it very fine visual grading with not a great deal to fault. Strong audio values and production, sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this is a real hi-fi recording and still is a pleasure to listen too. Any surface sounds are mainly light and infrequent and tracking effortless. Again, just enough to remind here-and-there it is a 44-year-old popular record, and a somewhat complex recording too. The early Jethro Tull band were truly inspired on this set and clearly the band themselves were delighted with it as stated on the cover. Beautifully recorded and produced with incredible instrumentation and Anderson never sounding better, even though played several times, it could still prove difficult to find significantly better. These heavyweight 1969 copies often took fearful hammer on vintage heavy-tracking record players, and many written-off or unlistenable. The majority of this splendid record offers clean and enjoyable sound and little spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. Nothing beats the pleasure in holding and hearing a first pressed 1969 copy of this evergreen classic – this has remained one of my favourite albums of all-time since I first heard it way back in 1971 as a schoolboy. The copy I bought at the time being on the pink rim format. It is a copy I can highly recommend, but if pristine perfection is mandatory, best wait for the ‘perfect’ copy that may eventually come along (with the likelihood of a price to match). This will please many collectors for sure.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
