Label Format & Rarity etc: Island – very first issue on the new pink rim label. These are heavily textured with rough surfaces and a deep inner ring ridge. The very first issues on this new format were heavier and thicker pressed and this from the same run as the King Crimson debut I am currently offering (but finishing very shortly). For me, the most beautiful and prettiest Island design ever. The Island label was in constant change between 1967 to 1970 and this replaced the full pink label with the i logo. This very popular album was pressed a number of times on many variant Island designs, but I rate this as one of the most difficult to find. Most-all pink rim copies had smooth labels and were much thinner. These very limited pressings that came and went very quickly with only a limited number of titles found on it. The labels have a more de luxe finish with deeper, richer colour and the texturing is lovely. The matrixes are much bigger and deeper punched just like the first pink format with the orange eyeball logo that are seen on the early Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention and Spooky Tooth albums (to name just three). Island records were largely pressed by EMI or Polydor at this time, and clearly, these are contract pressings and personally, in most cases, they offer the most incredible sound that match the very first issues ever made. Now sort-after and very collectable, but not seen too often, these heavyweight first pink rims are very special indeed.

Label Conditions: Both have a beautiful pastel pink hue and spindle marks are very fine, quite few and faint. These textured labels are very hard and are not easily marked, so judging numbers is less easy, but I can see very few at all and this one came from the collection of very lightly played records I purchased a couple or three months ago. What is certain, both look fantastic with ultra clean surfaces and genuine fresh visual condition.

Cat Number: ILPS 9103.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 166 grams. Very impressive and even heavier than most of the very first issues. Few standard albums at this time were pressed like this.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The album itself is not too hard to find, never so easy in fine condition however. I think this pressing, along with the second press on the pink block format, is the most difficult to find.

Original Year of Release: 1969

Matrix Nos: ILPS + 9103 + A2 / ILPS + 9103 + B2 [the music playing area is cut almost against the label rim area on side two, utilising all the available space width for ultimate sound quality]. Hence, the matrixes are seen punched into the actual label rim on this side - a maginifier was needed to see them. Side one are easily seen on my picture being large and deeply punched Roman style.

Musicians: Ian Anderson - flute, acoustic guitar, Hammond organ, piano, mandolin, balalaika, mouth organ and vocals; Glen Cornick - bass guitar; Clive Bunker - drums, percussion; Martin Lancelot Barre - electric guitar, flute.

Brief Info: Within the genre of ‘classic’ rock, there are few better albums than this second Jethro Tull set. Everything about this album is perfect – great songs, sublime packaging, fantastic sound and performance and issued on one of the best labels ever – no collection is complete without a fine copy of ‘Stand Up’. Following the brilliant debut album, Mick Abrahams departed for form Blodwyn Pig, this was never going to be easy, but the band rose to even greater heights. Beautifully packaged with its ‘working’ pop-up woodcut design cover, the details on the front are little short of remarkable. Musically, for me anyway, this is Jethro Tull’s best album, not a second of wasted time, every track is sublime and beautifully recorded too. Blending heavy and mellow songs with gorgeous instrumentation including strings, the details hidden within these vintage grooves are never-ending. This being the rare, ultimate first pressing on the new pink rim label with a massively heavy, thick record with deep wide grooves with no space wasted on the playing areas. This offers superb sound quality that has no distortion and barely any unwanted sounds. This can never be taken for granted on these types, an album with many flute parts and this instrument often can distort or clip on overplayed copies, and let’s face it, many, if not most of the early ones were. This is fully focused, sharp and clear and most fans of genuine classic rock will enjoy this lovely copy that includes the more yellow-hue front cover with the pop-up feature totally pristine and undamaged (please see close-ups). A little wear and creasing, but still attractive overall.

Cover’s Potential for Wear (and Damage): Very high. The delicate pop-up bends and tears easily and always nice to see this working part in pristine condition. The cover’s back is seldom seen devoid of heavy grubbiness, ringwear and ageing and this has little – few will ever avoid it especially with the heaviest pressings inside all these years.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with the original ‘pop-up’ cut out feature inside (this is beautiful and little short of as made). Printed and made in England, uncredited.

Cover Front: Very attractive indeed with little to fault on this truly gorgeous front that has a more yellow hue to the finish – this has to be one the most sublime cover designs ever made. The detail of the woodcut design cover is wonderful. This is clean, fresh with barely any marks or rubbing at all. A very faint hint of a semi-crease near the bottom right corner is almost nit-picking.

Cover Back: This back is near impossible to find without some marks or grubbiness. Being white with a thick record inside makes this darken with ringwear and rubbing and is often very dirty. This one has aged little but does have a crease near the left corner areas, being white here, they have very modest visibility and the lack of grubbiness and ringwear more than compensates.

Cover Inner Gatefold: It’s rare that the inner gatefold is equally susceptable to damage as the outer, but in this case it’s more than true. The cut-out, that stands up erect when the cover is opened is very delicate and to find one with no bends or creases is more unusual. The base is fully stuck down and rock solid with no blemishing or stresses (and NO repairs). Both front and back look superb with all the delicate cut out edges pristine, razor sharp, this stands up to attention perfectly and folds up the same (please see close up pictures of front and back). Barely any wear to the main inner faces of the card and any creasing is very faint indeed. An super inner that has barely aged at all.

Top Edges: Very light rub traces on the dark front, the back being white, shows little at all.

Bottom Edges: Light to light+ rubs on the same dark front. Being the resting edge, few will ever avoid a little, and a modest little is correct here.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. The sealed front is very neat and the back storage edges shows minimal hints of thickening or burring.

Spine and Text: Solid and quite thick, straight but this has flattened – or likely so – it does appear a little rounded in construction, so this may indeed be more normal on this one, but as the back edge on the right is a little proud of the top, some compression is very likely. All text is unworn (rarely seen as such) and the white surface shows barely any darkening or ageing, an exceptional spine for a difficult cover the compression apart (please see my text close-up, taken upside down as the compression means it’s seen better from the underside).

Corners: Some light tip rubs on the dark ones, and with utmost scrutiny, I can see NO tip-ins anywhere, a practice also getting to almost epidemic proportion. I guess owners of these things had to right to enhance their own covers if they wanted too, and I will always check closely for evidence of this practice and mention if I suspect it has occurred. .

Cover Summary: A very fine example of what is a superbly designed cover, not perfect but few ever will be these days. The fact this one has had a 160 gram record inside for over 40 years will mean the more likelihood of wear issues. The most significant factor on this one is the rear corner creasing, so not for the most discerning collectors, but many fans will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white, unlined inner. Rim impression but aged only very modestly with light discolour. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): this a top-quality super-heavyweight pressing with four light and totally minor surface marks on side one that have NO sound whatsoever. In fact they are totally ignored and the whole album plays with supreme sound with barely anything unwanted. Merely minor scuffs or marks, a little thicker than hairlines and non-penetrating (to say the least). Any other surface traces are very fine and faint as seen critically under angled light. Very clean and intense black and retains fine freshness and shine. Few records this great age escape without a tiny few surface marks and this is still a fantastic and impressive old record. You can imagine what many of these look and sound like when they do show up. Massively pressed to glean the maximum details from those deep grooves – a very special and much rarer Island pressing – few examples will ever have these elusive big punched matrix variants. It’s one that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: My belt-driven Linn rarely struggles to get up to speed, but this one really did test it out with an extra second or two to make it. Records of this weight are scarce, even for a very first pressing and will be immediately apparent to any winning bidder. This impressive and more unusual pressing plays even above i’ts high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound – this is a real hi-fi recording and a pleasure to listen too. Any traces are beyond gentle and few, even the fragile instrumental ‘Bouree’ plays well, this being very difficult. No pops or clicks noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for (at times) a fairly demanding album. The early Jethro Tull band were truly inspired on this set and clearly the band themselves were delighted with it. Supremely produced with incredibly instrumentation and Anderson never sounding better. Few copies will match or outperform this rarer example significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and all remains focused, clear and precise with absolutely no clipping. Nothing spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find better for top-drawer audio quality and is strongly recommended. A variant more than worthy in many a fine collection.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
