JETHRO TULL - SUNSHINE DAY - MISPRINT 7" UK - EXCELLENT

This year celebrates the 40th Anniversary of Jethro Tull, one of the greatest bands ever! It all started back in 1968 when MGM released Jethro Tull's first 7" single on 16th february 1968. The label is misprinted as "Jethro Toe" on both sides; Side 1: Sunshine Day; Side 2: Aeroplane. The catalogue number is MGM 1384. The real Tull collector knows that this single has been counterfeited in the USA but that copy shows the band's name as "Jethro Tull". This is the real thing and not the counterfeit!! I have been collecting Tull since 1973 and, if I remember well, I bought this single in London around 1975. I also have the counterfeit in my collection and there is a BIG difference between the two. Actually there are many differences between the real issue and the counterfeit; this can be checked on the internet by Googling "Jethro Tull / MGM 1384 / Sunshine Day". There is a site or two who has been specialising in early Jethro Tull 7".  This single is conform to what is explained except that the single is missing the centre, this has been taken out; when you look at some pictures, you will notice the small cutouts in the big centre hole where it has been. Many 7" singles were released as such in those days and usually DJ's took out the centre hole for the ease of playing 7" singles with the record player's 7" 'puck'.

The record

I am using Record Collector Magazine's (UK) grading system. Because there is a difference in quality of both sides, I have graded each side individually: Side 1: Sunshine Day: it must be said that this side has been played quite a lot; although I find that there is no deterioration/lessening in the sound quality, there are a few surface noises in the beginning of the song; therefore I quote it as VG+;     Side 2: Aeroplane: this side has not been played many times and the quality of the sound is excellent; there are no surface noises whatsoever; I quote it as EX+. On the label the playing time of each song has been written with a ballpoint pen (see pictures).

The Sleeve

The overall quality of the record sleeve is good; it is the original MGM sleeve that came with the single. On the front side there is a small tear which has been taped; on the back side there is a tiny tear on the right of the centre hole and two small pencil marks on the top. Collectors do know that it is not so difficult to find an MGM sleeve like this one (if you want to upgrade this item); you can easily find one at any good record fair in Europe.

It has now been about three or four years ago that this single has appeared on Ebay; this is your chance to eventually complete your collection!! Remember, it is the first ever vinyl of a fantastic band which has been making records and continuously touring the whole world without interruption for the last 40 years !!!
